Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Ramirez.
Hi Kim, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
The honor is mine – I’m so grateful for the opportunity.
Well, the backstory of A Sprinkle of Sunshine – Cake Balls & More actually started with a storm. The seed was planted to start my business back when the dark cloud of the pandemic began. 2020 took so much from so many, myself included. My Dad fought an 8-week-long battle with the “C-word” ALL ALONE (without us being able to be by his side) in the hospital that summer before he left us. I’m naturally a very positive person with strong faith in God who loves to inspire and to motivate those around me, but the darkness of the storm with my Dad had loomed over me for almost a year until when I decided to take my joy back. It was October, my birthday month {Woop! Woop!!}, and it hit me that I needed to do something BIG, that was for me, that was my own, that would spark that fire up back inside of me. I knew I wasn’t the only who needed some hope back in their life! So, as a gift to myself, I decided to start a baking business. It could not have been more Divinely placed in my lap! I mean, I love me some baking, photography, event planning, crafts, design, even bartending {once upon a time}. I’m able to incorporate all of my previous skills and empower others all in the comfort of my very own home! I had already been working from home full-time for years, so I needed something that seamlessly fit into my busy routine of being a Wife to a husband of 17 years and Mom/Uber driver to my amazing daughter. I was totally made to do this. The cherry on top is that my sweet girl also has an entrepreneurial spirit and has the gift of encouragement like her Mama. She gets a front-row seat of the good, bad, and ugly of owning a business. Shout out to the parents leading by example to raise strong leaders {I see you}. By the end of my birthday week, I had submitted the necessary business forms, registered my business name, created my logo and social media accounts. I was ready for the world to meet Kim Ramirez – Cake Baller, Shot Caller.
Ultimately, the story of A Sprinkle of Sunshine is my calling to bring some light and hope into the world by spreading “A Sprinkle of Sunshine” through noshing on some beautifully hand-crafted, delicious desserts.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Uh… no. Struggles and obstacles go hand-in-hand with owning a business! It’s just part of the process. Anything worth doing/having has its fair share of difficulty.
I’m local to Rockwall which feels like the mecca of small business owners. I’m blessed to be part of such a great community of like-minded individuals who have welcomed my business with open arms. Y’all, business owners supporting business owners is my jam, and this community is exactly that – about community not competition. Everyone is really so inspiring so much that my brain is constantly thinking about how to grow, who to collaborate with next, how best to market for the next event, and so on. Mind you; I still have a full-time job that I enjoy; an incredible husband and daughter to spend time with; and all the responsibilities of wearing the badges of Mom, Wife, Employee, Daughter, Sister, Friend… but Mama gets tired! My biggest struggle is knowing when to stop. Last year, I reached a point where my health was starting to take a backseat and I really just wasn’t very present with my family the way that I they deserved. While I whole-heartedly want my business to grow and succeed, I also know it’s not a race and it’s not going to be at the expense of my health or my relationships. The beauty of being a small business owner is we get to control the deadlines and the timelines. We go hard based on passion and drive, but also, we also have to be humble enough to know that self-care and preservation is required as well. I know this goes against the grain here, honestly, what’s the point of all the success, money, and growth if you’re not healthy enough to enjoy it and no one left in your life to enjoy it with?
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m most proud that my work is as equally beautiful as it is delicious. It has almost become a norm that the prettier dessert is the higher chance of being too sweet or lacking in flavor. My goal was to create hand-crafted, show-stopping desserts that don’t sacrifice delicious flavor for presentation. Leading with cake balls, A Sprinkle of Sunshine – Cake Balls and More is a one-stop shop for all your dessert table needs from cakes to all the chocolate-dipped things.
Packaging also includes something special. It’s the other place I get to sprinkle some much-needed “sunshine”. Every package contains this positive message because sometimes we all need a little reminder – “You are Worthy, Smart, Capable, Brave, Strong.” “Shine bright today!” is another quote that is always on my labels – it’s based on the Matthew 5:16 Bible verse to “let your light shine before others” for God’s glory which is my key “Why.”
The two collections currently offered:
Our Sweet Sunshine Collection contains all the {kid-friendly} classic flavors and treats. These classics will tantalize your palate and put a smile on your face. Cake Balls are made to order using 100% natural cage-free large brown eggs (that contain no added hormones and no antibiotics) and other quality ingredients. All chocolate is always melted with organic coconut oil.
What sets us apart is that we specialize in alcohol-infused desserts as well! My bartending background has paved the way for marrying unique flavors together. Something a lil more grown and sexy, our signature Bright&Boozy Collection contains desserts like Chocolate Cake Balls infused with Baileys Irish Cream, Prosecco Berries that are rolled in rose hips and turbinado sugar, cake filling made with homemade Strawberry Champagne preserves. All are made with quality ingredients and uniquely flavored with top-shelf spirits and other fine liqueurs and wines.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Not sure if I’m supposed to take it back this far, but… let’s go! I grew up with some hardcore gift-giving parents. I mean what kid wouldn’t love that, right?! If you know me personally, I totally inherited this “gift” from them! But what I really fell in love with was how full it made my soul knowing that I was able to put a smile on someone’s face who may be going through a struggle or having a rough day or feeling down. I guess you could say gifts are my love language – gifts of love, support, encouragement, and positivity… like a sprinkle of sunshine to one’s day. Get it? It’s totally my God-given purpose to empower, to inspire, and to shine bright showing His love in action. My love for baking started as a kid, too {I learned early on what it meant to seize chocolate!}. I remember my signature dessert was a pineapple cake with a whipped cream frosting and just a pinch of cinnamon that I loved to make for my parents! Then as an adult, my signature dessert was a lil more sophisticated – a boozy pecan pie made with Whiskey {and a pinch of cinnamon in that too}. That was my dad’s favorite so much that I named my Bright&Boozy pecan pie cake ball after him – The BOB.
