Conversations with Shreya Bhandari

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shreya Bhandari.

Hi Shreya, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
There are about thirty-four million people below the poverty line in our country, and most are likely not receiving the education they deserve. I decided to be a part of the solution to this issue by donating my self-published books to organizations that help children.

Coming from a family of teachers, I’ve always been taught the value of education. I always had a love for math and wanted to share that love with other students, specifically with underprivileged children. My passion for Math and providing impoverished students with proper education motivated me to write and publish a math book for children. Then I purchased over one hundred copies of my own book using the money I made from tutoring other students at a local tutoring center. Subsequently, I donated these copies to three organizations: the Children’s Advocacy Center of Collin County, Kairos International, and the Ronald McDonald House.

My intrinsic motivation is to inspire other students to utilize their passions for the betterment of our community. Whether a student is enthusiastic about education, sports, painting, craft making, or any other field, I believe that by finding an intersection between our passion and philanthropic actions, we can make the ultimate difference for the underprivileged people in our society.

I plan to buy and donate more copies of my book to more non-profit organizations, and I also plan on writing another book that centers and focuses on the topics I was covering in my previous one. I really liked learning and researching about how children learn math and the different ways in which children respond to math work.

I have received amazing support from my family, especially her grandfather, Prem Bhandari, and my grandmother, Meena Bhandari who has been an English teacher for over 35 years. If it wasn’t for the support of my family, I wouldn’t be able to accomplish the things I have done. I really want to be an advocate for my community and to inspire other people like me to have a positive impact on the world.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I had never written a book earlier, let alone on a not-so-loved subject as Mathematics. I wanted to write a book that is not only beneficial to young students but to anyone looking to learn or start learning. I consulted with several Math education research professors globally to learn the art of writing an academic book that is more interesting to the students.

My next challenge was to get money to buy the books so that I can donate them to non-profit organizations. For that, I found a local tutoring center and became a tutor to earn money. I used all that money to buy books for donation.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
Whether you are enthusiastic about education, sports, painting, craft making, or any other field, identify your passion and start sharing that with the underprivileged sections of our society.
