Meet Yolanda Mathis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yolanda Mathis.

Hi Yolanda, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I started out working for IRS for over 22 years. This is where I learned how to officially become the tax professional I am today. When I started back in Dec 1997, I was in collections and moved over to tax-free side. I worked in several areas of that department. I applied and became a Tax Law Specialist. This is where I was able to assist tax clients with more difficulty issues. I assisted taxpayers how to use the treaty, foreigners that came into the United States, estates, gift tax rules, etc… While working at IRS, I learned every aspect of taxes. I also became a teacher so that I could branch out and educate and share my knowledge with my peers. I retired from IRS in 2018 and this is where I begin to think what my next phase of my life would be. I was introduced to a young lady named Shatonya Thomas; she was looking for someone with my expertise and knowledge to assist and to partner with. For the last three years, we have been working side by side to dominate the tax industry.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say it hasn’t always been easy for me, growing up in life I had a lot of struggles, some my own and others not. Just trying to fit in. I was an army brat kid so meeting new people and traveling was always on the list. It also was a hindrance to me in a way that I didn’t really get settled till I move to Dallas, Tx. Trying to finish college and work, I had to make a choice, and I chose to work. School wasn’t really for me since I wanted that independence. This is where I started at IRS.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m Tax Professional, but I specialize in Tax Resolution. This is where I really can assist taxpayers with their tax debt. I have different programs that I offer where a client can either get their debt reduced or completely wiped out. I offer assistance on helping my clients with getting penalties and interest abated off their tax records. I also have knowledge with tax audits on how to get reopen or assisting with getting it resolved. I’m proud of the fact that I step put on faith and didn’t let anything or no one hold me back from becoming my own boss. At first, I was a little scared, based on trying to compete. But since I have all the tools and knowledge that I personally learned from the best which would be IRS, I’m able to set myself aside from others in the industry and bring something different to the table. There are things that I know internally and able to use to my advantage. Also, I’m able to assist my clients with different issues they may have with IRS.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
What I’ve learned most with COVID is to be flexible and to count your blessings. Take nothing for granted. During the crisis, we were still able to assist our clients and just transfer them over to virtual. Some clients liked it, and only a few had to really adjust, but it worked out great.
