Today we’d like to introduce you to Annette Presley.
Hi Annette, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I got interested in nutrition when I was 16. We had aerobics (back in the 80s) for physical education in high school and I decided I was going to be an aerobics instructor, so I would pick up Shape magazine at the store, but it was the nutrition articles that really caught my attention. In college, I put nutrition down as my major and then found out about registered dietitians and followed that path.
About 14 years into being a dietitian, I discovered that the advice I was told to give out was actually contributing to chronic disease and obesity. That sent me down the functional nutrition path, and I got a functional nutrition certification in 2017.
With functional nutrition, we look at the structure and function of the body and support it with whole foods, targeted supplements, and lifestyle behaviors. The goal is to keep people well rather than treating a disease.
Most recently, I became a certified Theta Healer, an energy healing modality that helps with emotions, beliefs, and unforgiveness we pick up from trauma and other stress events in life. Sometimes these beliefs are passed down in our DNA from out ancestors, so we aren’t even aware of them. Emotions and beliefs play a significant role in our ability to heal as they can hold disease in the body.
I am also a Root Cause Protocol Consultant, which means I work to balance minerals, particularly magnesium, copper, and iron as mineral imbalance is at the root of all symptoms.
In my 30-plus years of practice, I have come to see that disease is a 3-step process:
1. Stress is the match that starts the fire that burns everything to the ground
2. Stress causes mineral dysregulation which leads to symptoms
3. Stress causes emotions and beliefs that determine where our symptoms show up in the body
Now, I help people manage stress, balance minerals, and heal emotionally so they can get their life back and enjoy it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No. It’s not easy in this world when you think outside the box. There is a lot of resistance and pushback. I had to defend my credentials in 2008 for telling people to eat butter instead of margarine, for example. I won my case because I had the science to back up my position, but ethically, I had to make sure I informed people that what I taught about fat was not the “accepted” position. I have to spend more time educating people because what I do requires a paradigm shift, a change in the way we think about health.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
When I started out as a dietitian, I worked in the hospital setting. I mostly worked in rehab, long-term care, and ICU, and I was the dietitian who trained all the new dietitians; I think because I was more patient and could make everything simple to understand.
I have enjoyed all my jobs as a dietitian, but after taking time off to raise kids, I wanted to focus on keeping people out of the hospital. I worked for a few years at a local health food store and learned things I was never taught in school, especially about supplements. I got to have fun conversations with customers in the vitamin aisle and really got a sense for what people are thinking and how they felt about health.
One thing I noticed was a good deal of fear around eating the wrong things or taking the wrong supplements, or getting a chronic disease and things like that, so fear is the first thing I try to remove. I help people feel more confident listening to their body and acknowledging what works for them and what doesn’t so they can truly be in charge of their health and an advocate for themselves at the doctor’s office.
My focus is on women’s health because healthcare for women is still in the dark ages. We go to the doctor feeling like our body is falling apart, but our labs come back normal, so we are mostly dismissed as crazy and sent home with an antidepressant, birth control, or scheduled for a hysterectomy. The options we get do not honor our mind and body.
The drug can-cut approach, as I call it, doesn’t solve the root problem. It just puts a bandaid on it, so we feel better for a little while but then find ourselves back where we started, or worse. There is a time and place for drugs and surgery, but those should not be the first things we try.
I had one client who was scheduled to have a hysterectomy, lost her insurance, and had to cancel the surgery. She was in so much pain she could barely function. I tweaked her diet and had her take a few supplements to balance minerals, and in six months, she had insurance but no longer needed a hysterectomy. It’s always better if you can keep your body parts, and for most people, that is possible.
I help women handle their hormones so they can be the high performing rockstar at work, the fun, energetic mom at home, and the passionate lover in the bedroom, and I help women who have struggled with infertility get pregnant naturally.
Hormones are like teenagers; they are heavily influenced by their peers, and the peers of hormones are minerals. I specialize in getting minerals to behave (back in the right balance) so hormones will do what we want them to do and what they are supposed to do. I get to the root of the problem.
I am most proud of my ability to give hope to women because that hope changes everything for them. Most of my clients have tried “all the things” and think nothing is going to work for them. I am able to show them a different path, one they have never been on, one where they are empowered and put in the driver’s seat so they can finally heal.
What sets me apart is that I work on the whole person, including thoughts and emotions, and I support the structure and function of the body. I don’t treat a disease; I strengthen the mind and body so that when disease shows up, the body has the ability to fight it and come back into balance.
