Today we’d like to introduce you to Shruti Benjamin and Bianca Caram.
Shruti and Bianca, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Both of us completed our residencies in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas. During our final year of residency, we started our job hunt and found that none of the positions available really had what we were looking for in our career. We wanted to be able to trust our partners to take care of our patients the same way we would and have the flexibility to make our own business decisions. Instead of settling, we decided to take this matter into our own hands.
After working together for 4 years in a challenging residency, we learned that we make a great team, balance each other out, and practice in a similar manner when it comes to taking care of our patients. Together we worked on setting up our own OB-Gyn practice during our final year of residency. This is a road less traveled for the majority of new physicians, however, being “cowgirls” didn’t scare us! We had great support from all of the physicians, staff, and leadership at the hospital as we worked towards our goal. We finally opened our doors to Legacy Women’s Health on Halloween 2016!
Has it been a smooth road?
As we have paved our own road, we have definitely encountered some roadblocks. Some of the challenges we faced revolved around the fact that we lack formal training in business and finance but our motivation to succeed had made us quick learners. We have also learned to utilize our resources such as our consultants, colleagues, and even our husbands! Some of the other struggles we have had have to do with the fact that we are young female physicians. Often times, we do not get the credibility that we deserve because of how young we are not only in looks but also our career! These challenges have helped us grow and work towards a successful practice.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Legacy Women’s Health story. Tell us more about the business.
Legacy Women’s Health provides obstetrical and gynecologic services to women in the DFW metroplex. We not only help women through normal pregnancies but can also help patients with high-risk pregnancies. Both of us are also well trained in routine office gynecology in addition to surgical procedures such as hysterectomy. We have also been trained in the use of the DaVinci robot and surgical procedures that can be done utilizing it.
At Legacy Women’s Health, we strive to provide a warm and welcoming environment for our patients. Since we are only a two-physician practice, our entire team at Legacy Women’s Health really gets to know each of our patients and provide personalized care. Our office builds relationships that place an emphasis on trust. We enjoy working with our patients as a team to empower them with the knowledge to be part of the decision making process.
Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc
Over the next 5-10 years, our vision is to continue to build our practice to provide women’s health services to a larger number of women of all ages, including new providers, and perhaps branch out in other areas of women’s health.
