Meet Cindy Simpson of Gensler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Simpson.

Cindy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My father was a general contractor so I grew up in the business. One of my fondest memories as a child was climbing into his truck on a Saturday morning to visit job sites where he described to me the scope of the project and the vision of the owner. It was this early exposure to the profession that developed my keen eye for details and created my passion for design. It’s this notion of propelling my father’s legacy that satisfies my emotional drive to this day.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The architectural world has been a male-dominated profession in years past and as a female in the industry, it is imperative to be professionally confident, mentally agile and intellectually valiant. The field is much more diverse today, especially at Gensler, where female leadership is mentored, rewarded and recognized equally.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Gensler – what should we know?
Gensler Dallas started in this city as an interior architect for corporate clients. Now approaching our 20th anniversary, we’ve expanded to architectural design for airports, mixed-use developments, restaurants, even brand design. Our specialty now, is anywhere that design can create better experiences. Which is really everywhere. From Legacy Hall to The Star, to coworking spaces, to signage and wayfinding. Think about it. How something looks is completely related to how you feel about it. And we’re all about elevating the experience through the power of design.

What I’m most proud about, currently, is that we’ve built a company of artistic, design-minded people, who have voted Gensler Dallas as one of the Top 100 Places to work in DFW. And that’s completely due to our people, how we treat each other as family, our entrepreneurial spirit, and how we spur each other to our best work.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Our city is a great place for business – not just the architecture and design business but on a multifaceted level for business. In my 20+ years in the design profession, I have never seen the building landscape as vibrant as it is today for Dallas. We have the opportunity to develop environments for some of the top companies across the globe, directly enriching the lives and culture of our communities which is paramount for attracting top talent to our city.

The business climate is user-friendly and the Dallas market is one of the best market economies in the nation right now so it is a great place to jump-start a career. The one area of improvement for our city is mass transit – this will aid in attracting companies like Amazon and Apple to our region.
