Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Patmon.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My life’s story and its mission has always circled around the importance of identity. I am the CEO of Camp Exposure, an Athlete Development Faith-based Organization. My vision is to create and develop environments where people have access to knowledge and resources that help them discover their identity and operate fully in their purpose. I dedicate my time to creating and developing platforms and organizations to make these resources accessible.
The vision for Camp Exposure began to unfold when I was a child, growing up as a young athlete playing outside with friends and family constantly. We all had a passion for sports and the desire to become professional athletes. As life continued to progress, we began to realize that not all of us would get the chance to accomplish those goals. While my career continued to advance, and I was Blessed to play in the NFL for 6 years, I noticed the mental toll on some of my peers as they started to recognize that their professional athletic opportunities were lessening. As childhood dreams were dying, I could see a change in some of their behaviors, as if they were lost and had no identity, purpose, or worth beyond sports.
Intentionally taking the time to examine this issue throughout my life as a young player and during my career as a Professional Athlete and Coach helped me to outline a part of my calling and create an organization that helps athletes discover their identity beyond sports and take their God-given gifts and direct them into a successful life and professional career. Personally, I realized how important this was when my professional football career ended, and it was my turn to go through the transition of redefining my own identity. I quickly realized how much of a challenge being and/or staying connected to your true self and purpose can be regardless of your success level, the amount of time you have, or your age. I recognized that the privilege of having a career in the NFL gave me more time to discover my identity beyond sports and great access to resources and support, and that is why Camp Exposure exists. Through the work of our organization and amazing partnerships, we expose athletes of all levels to holistic development by providing knowledge, resources, opportunity, and mentors so they, too can walk fully in their purpose.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been like any other road. You come across stop signs, speed bumps, wrong-way signs, potholes, and speed limits. I believe it is all a part of the journey of operating in your purpose. As you build a business, there are multiple roles and hats you have to wear. With that comes hard work and necessary moments to push through. As a former athlete, I reached the professional level by embracing hard work and battling through tough workouts while I was with and without a team. Being a founder, you face those same hard challenges. I will continue to have the same mentality and approach to battle through those moments.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Camp Exposure is a faith-based, holistic athlete development organization. Our mission is to help athletes discover their identity beyond sports and develop their God-given gifts into a professional career and successful life. For generations, due to a lack of belief in having purpose or worth outside of sports, athletes have solely focused on their performance on the field and have neglected their personal & professional development. Camp Exposure provides tools, tips, strategies, resources, and mentors that help athletes get to where they need to go through the Camp Exposure Academy, Educational Sports Camps, and Youth Sporting events. Our approach focuses on even key pillars that help our athletes develop a solid foundation in and outside the arena.
Through our organization, we offer two programs that focus on athlete development:
Camp Exposure Educational Football Camp is a 3-day invitational camp exposing student-athletes to the knowledge needed to discover their identity beyond sports. While we help our invitees succeed in their athletic careers by providing professional training, tips, and strategies, we also provide coaching for success in multiple areas of life. Over three days, high-level executives and expert speakers are brought in to lead workshops and round table discussions covering the seven pillars of Camp Exposure.
The Camp Exposure Academy is a 1 to 3-year extensive program that creates space for athletes to develop holistically. Monthly mentorship sessions are set to help them discover their identity, worth, and purpose beyond sports. Our focus is academic and professional advancement and building professional relationships in preparation for mentorship, internship, and job opportunities. Our goal is to build a solid foundation and set a plan in place for their transition into the next steps of their lives and leadership.
The workshops and discussions within our organization are centered around our specialized Camp Exposure curriculum. Our curriculum is a customizable interactive tool book to guide and direct athletes and coaches in their personal and professional development. Throughout the entire curriculum, we provide interactive activities and discussion questions to help coaches and players truly connect with their development.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Yes, most definitely! First and foremost, I am a believer in Christ, and the relationship I have with my Heavenly Father is the main source in my life. The Bible itself is a guide for our lives and provides so much valuable information. I have an Executive Coach who has helped with my development tremendously. Her name is BeNeca Ward Griffin, the CEO of Moments of Focus LLC, a brand and leadership development firm. She also has a book, a Purpose Development Guide that I’m reading, titled Moments of Focus. For further leadership development, I am also a big fan of author Myles Munroe’s books In Charge and Rediscovering the Kingdom and The Basement Podcast, led by Tim Ross. Financially my go-to book is Simple Money. Rich Life by Bob Lotich.
