Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Dalila Reyes.
Hi Jessica, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2016, I decided to follow my mom’s footsteps into cutting hair. At the time, my mother had open up her own shop, and it was convenient for me to work for her meanwhile I finished my bachelor’s at UTA. As soon as I got into barber school, my focus shifted. I was more passionate about barbering than what school was offering me at the time. I had took a gap year in 2017. I had gotten my license and started working full-time for my mom. At the same time, I had met my husband, and a year later, we welcomed our first child. This is we’re my mind started maturing for the better. I started being more present in my craft, in my mother’s business, and in my family. In February 2020, both my parents passed away. Leaving the business up to my older sister and I to manage. Never did I think that I would have such commitment just fall on my lap. And at that moment, I felt hopeless, and I wasn’t the only one. My sister and I went through hell and back to get where we’re at right now; with each of us having three little kids, it was not a smooth at all.
My sister and I had gotten criticism from everyone you can think of. From relatives to random strangers, but the same way, there was criticism, there was support, and I thank my family who kept checking in on us, whether by phone or in person. The little words of encouragement really helped us get through it. And the crazy part is! We had a lot of encouragement from our local community.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been. When my parent passed away. My sister and I couldn’t grieve for our loss as we’d like. We had to open our business a week later so our employees would be able to work. We went to counseling when we could, but really what helped us get through it is God. Another struggle we had to face is the pandemic shortly after my parent passing. That was extremely hard because after just burying our parents. We weren’t financially stable to say we were going to be able to survive the shutdown where all salons had to be closed for a month in half I believe. By god’s grace we are here to say that we survived the pandemic, and we are open to serve our customers and community.
