Conversations with Caleb and Kay Wills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caleb and Kay Wills.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Originally a part of North Texas Corgi Rescue, our founding members had collectively rescued and rehomed over 150 corgis in the course of only ten years. Whew! That’s a lot of dog hair.  Once the original board and group disbanded in 2015, a few of the members felt the need to continue the mission of helping all low riders in need. Thus began the start of North Texas Corgi Connection in 2018, when we received 501c3 status.

Aside from connecting a corgi-less family with a corgi in need, our main goals are to promote spay/neuter, contribute to medical assistance, fund a dog food program, and make the world a better place, one corgi at a time.  Our belief is “saving one animal will not change the world, but for that one animal, their world will change forever.” As humans, part of our time on Earth should be in service to others. This is our chosen call to service.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When you first get into rescue, you wishfully believe that each little abandoned pup will be well-mannered, housebroken, and happy in your home. This is an absolutely bogus idea! Typically, they have had no obedience training at all, manage to repeatedly soil your new rug, and start a civil war within your home pack.

So why do we do it? There is a moment when the abused corgi decides to trustingly lay next to you to nap. There is a day when your foster dog meets their new adoptive family, and everyone is giddy and all smiles. There is an email that reads ‘Thank you for giving me my new best friend.’ And, there is an ending when you learn your rescued corgi from fifteen years ago, the one who chewed your favorite throw pillow, has passed on from a long life well lived. For every moment, day, email, and ending – this is why we do it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We obtain our rescue corgis as strays, released by their present owner, or in animal shelters. The little loaves are placed into foster homes and receive updated vaccinations, spay/neuter, beginner obedience training, and personality evaluations. After that time, a home is chosen from many adoption applications that will best suit the foster pup.

What are we most proud of? We have had a fantastic success rate with our rescue alumni because we focus on choosing the right family for the foster corgi as well as the best fit for someone’s home. Both aspects need to be fulfilled to have a happy outcome.

We also want to be an ally for pet parents and the life of their corgi by offering medical grants and a food program for those in need, whether they have adopted from our group or not. By doing this, we may be able to help someone keep their low rider where they are most loved – in their home. Our website also contains many educational topics and references for pet parents.

What sets us apart from other rescue groups? After the potential adopter has met the foster corgi, they may bring the floof home for a two week trial sleep-over. This gives the pet parent time to bond with the rescue and see if this is the best fit for the pup and a match made in doggy heaven.  We have foster homes across the state of Texas and our adoption application may be found on our website.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Our three core values are Rehab, Rehome, and Renew, and this sums up exactly what matters most. We take in rescue corgis that need to be rehabbed, whether that means medical attention, emotional support, or proper obedience training. We then find the best environment to rehome the corgi. And lastly, if all goes according to plan and we have achieved the first two, then our rescue corgi will be renewed. This happy outcome is all that matters.
