Meet Mallory Shelton of Mallory Shelton Photography in North Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mallory Shelton.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up I always loved photography or at least taking pictures of others. The first time that I clearly remember my love for photography was when I studied abroad in college, I took more pictures than my cards would hold. I remember searching everywhere for a store to buy an extra SD card for my camera in Florence. However, it wasn’t until 2013 when I was preparing for my own wedding that I realized my passion for photography. I bought a nice DSLR for our wedding events and our honeymoon. On our honeymoon in Costa Rica I loved taking pictures of the culture and the people. This is when I wanted to really learn the ins and outs of photography to get more out of my pictures. I took a workshop in early 2014, and from there I began to take pictures for friends and family. In the Fall of 2014, my husband was beginning his MBA and since he was busy with school it gave me the opportunity and time to pursue my photography. Over the past few years, I have taken additional photography workshops to build my skills and business.

Since, I was a little girl I had always wanted to be a teacher and work with young children. However, I took a different route in college and majored in business. I currently work as a commercial real estate analyst by day. Photography fulfills my passion and allows me to work with babies, children, and families. It brings me joy and allows me to use my creativity.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have been some struggles along the way, but I believe in taking risks and there are always bumps along the road when you put yourself out there. One struggle was finding my niche or place in the photography landscape. Early on as a new photographer I didn’t know if my passion was weddings, portraits or newborns. It took me some time to know that my heart lies with newborns and motherhood. I love getting to capture the early days and watch as these little ones grow. I believe motherhood is something special that needs to be captured.

Another struggle for me is balance. As mentioned earlier work full-time as well, that being said I do most if not all of my sessions on the weekend. While early on my husband was in school on the weekends this was a bit easier, now we have a 10 month old and I am learning how to balance it all. It is a daily struggle to know how to split my time between mom, work, and photography. My husband has been my biggest support and he allows me to do this and that I am so grateful for.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Mallory Shelton Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
Mallory Shelton Photography specializes in natural light lifestyle newborn and portrait photography. My style is simple, fresh, and organic. My focus during a session is to capture the family in their home or location and the genuine connections that they have. Every family wants that perfect picture and sometimes it’s the in between moments that last a lifetime.

I’m most proud of the fact that I have been able to grow my business and still provide my clients with the same personal touch as when I first started. Developing a relationship with my clients, as well as, my client experience sets me apart from others. I want clients to walk away feeling confident and relaxed that we were able to capture images of their children that show joy and emotion. Having clients come back and allowing me to capture their family milestones is the greatest compliment for me.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck – It has allowed me to grow slow and steady. My very first session was for one of my closest friends. She took a chance on me, and from there I began to slowly grow. Luck hasn’t always been on my side but I try to stay positive and make the most of every situation.
