Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Valdez.
Brittany, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started out with photography because I’ve always had a prominent need to record and document my life. I kept a journal every single day for 11 years growing up. When life became too busy to journal about, photography seemed like the most convenient way to continue to document my best memories and keep up with how my family was growing. I received my first DSLR in college and I was ecstatic. I wanted to buy lenses and flashes and try light kits and do everything photography related! I posted pictures all the time on Facebook, and soon I had friends reaching out to me to take photos of them. So my business started out as a way to do what I loved and to help my friends out. But I realized that I really enjoyed working with and photographing people, and that starting a photography business was a great way to grow as a person, learn about photography, and do what I love. I’ve now been in business for seven years!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I majored in Computer Engineering in college. I never took business classes and I wasn’t business oriented. The most difficult part for me was definitely figuring out all the legal aspects of creating and maintaining a photography business. Not to mention that laws vary per county and state and sometimes per year, so it’s a constant learning process.
Brittany Black Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I do all types of photography, but I specialize in weddings, couples, and proposal photos. I love the outdoors and hold on-location photo sessions. I focus on natural posing and making sure my clients are having a great time during their session. Communication is my first priority. I’m very detail oriented and I do all that I can to ensure that my clients know what to expect from me and I know what is important to them so that I can better serve them.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
For me, success is about the ongoing climb toward self-actualization. I want to be all that I am capable of, by focusing on personal and professional growth, embracing the unknown, enjoying the journey, continuing to keep up with my closest friends and family, and being grateful for everything that I have.
