Rising Stars: Meet Samuel Jackson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samuel Jackson.

Samuel Jackson

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When I was around 16, I received a camera as a birthday gift. I started using it to record videos with my friends during our free time outside of school. I found that editing and shooting these videos helped me become more expressive and outgoing, which was a change for me since I wasn’t very outspoken when I was younger. Eventually, I began taking photos with my camera, and the outlet to be expressive opened up even more. It quickly became a passion and has stuck with me over the years.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would say that my journey has not always been a smooth road. In recent years, I struggled to find my path in life. I didn’t have a clear direction and just went through the motions. However, as I’ve gotten older, I have a better understanding of how my personal challenges and values impact the art that I create. Since I haven’t had any formal training, I’ve had to develop my own methods for learning and creating. There are still times when I go through phases of not creating anything and times when I become obsessive about making art. It all depends on my current mental space at the moment, but I could also say that about life as a whole.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
As a photographer, my specialty is portraiture. I would say I am known for my contemporary approach to photography, always striving to showcase my subjects in the best and most complementary way possible with leaving room for the viewer to comprehend. I believe in the importance of storytelling and helping to create memories through my work. Over time, I have become confident that I can materialize my vision through the lens, which wasn’t always the case. While I’m not too different from other photographers, my focus remains on always looking for ways to refine my work and grow. Sharing my talents with others is what I consider true success.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk-taking.
My perspective on taking risks is that while it is important, the level of risk involved should be based on individual circumstances. For instance, when I was 18, I made the decision to leave school early to follow my passion for photography. At the time, it felt like my only option and, being young and idealistic, I pursued it with all I had. However, due to my naivety, I wasn’t immediately successful. Despite this, the experience of taking the risk provided valuable lessons and insights into both my work and personal views.
