Today we’d like to introduce you to Darnell Baltimore.
Hi Darnell, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My passion for candles began in 2018. I used to work at a retail job, and every week I got paid. From there I would walk across the street to a store that sells candles and spend 45 minutes smelling and buying them. That happen consistently until I quit my retail job in 2020 because I wanted to focus on what made me happy and how I could show more of my creative personality. So, I sat back for a day and wrote down things I like, which are candles and music. And I began the process of starting my candle business, which was hard due to me suddenly not being able to keep a job to fund it and listening to people close to me who never had and encouraged my best interest, but me moving on to starting my candle business was to prove they couldn’t stop what was going to be created for me through God. So, with the support of my mom and my mentor Stephanie Hoyte CEO of Fashion Dollz Boutique, I was able to create Saint Scents.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My road into entrepreneurship was easy on the business side, I really adapted well with the help of my mentor, who’s already been in my position and knows all about business in general, along with different emotions you have with getting everything right. At that time, it was hard dealing with people who doubted me, but I when I launched on my birthday, my customers proved everybody wrong for me and sold me out in seconds. Even when we emailed everyone, they ordered double. That’s when I knew Saint Scents is going to be big.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Saint Scents is an aromatherapy candle company. We specialize in aromatherapy and wellness. Here at Saint Scents, we infuse our candles with natural high-quality fragrances that are then blended into the wax we use. While creating Saint Scents, I made sure not to limit myself on creating things I wanted with the creative freedom I have, so I made a world where I can bring aromatherapy and music together. I came up with the concept of creating my candles based on a song I like and changing the names, so my customers can guess what it is, which we tell them on our TikTok page. We are always working on creating a personalized experience for our customers.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My happiness comes from the support Saint Scents gets. I’m still amazed that I created something very beautiful in a time I really didn’t know what I was doing. Recently, I’ve been taking the time to take it all in as a business owner because I spend time looking at Saint Scents as a customer that I miss those big moments I should be enjoying.
