Community Highlights: Meet Bethany Grannan of The Placenta Pill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bethany Grannan.

Bethany Grannan

Bethany, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been a nurse for 18 years. My husband and I moved to Dallas when I was 7 months pregnant, and while I had excellent care, my birth experience was disappointing. During my second pregnancy, I had a desire to give birth differently, so we took natural birthing classes, hired a doula, and planned to have my placenta encapsulated. I had heard from friends who had good results from taking placenta pills, and I got connected with a group of ladies, one of whom happened to be a placenta encapsulator herself! For me, I knew that this would be my last baby, and I wanted to do “all the things”! I figured having my placenta turned into pills would be a good backup plan just in case I had any struggles with emotions postpartum. I didn’t want to have any regrets, no what-ifs.

The idea with placenta encapsulation is to rebalance the postpartum hormones naturally, as each woman’s placenta is a perfect match for her own needs. The placenta contains a good deal of iron, which is key for energy, as well as oxytocin and progesterone, which are wonderful feel-good, bonding hormones.

I ended up having a beautiful, healing birth and a great experience taking my placenta pills. Eventually, I combined my nursing background and passion for birth by becoming a Bradley Method certified childbirth teacher and taught hundreds of couples. It was such a joy! Not long after, my friend, who was a placenta encapsulator, asked me if I would be interested in buying the business from her. It was an instant “yes” from me! I bought the business in 2014 and hit the ground running! I got certified in bloodborne pathogens specifically for placenta encapsulators, and completed my Texas Food Handlers Safety Certificate. What fun it was to create a website, a new logo and start building relationships with local OBs, midwives, doulas, and anyone else who served expecting families.

The business grew and grew, and we now have trained 5 other wonderful encapsulation specialists! We are able to serve even more moms from Dallas to Gainesville to Fort Worth to McKinney to Richardson to Arlington and beyond! I’m really proud of being DFW’s only nurse-owned placenta encapsulation service. Safety and sanitation are of the highest importance to me; we follow OSHA and CDC guidance on safe handling and cleaning techniques.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve been very blessed with great clients and good relationships with care providers who refer to us. A law was passed in Texas in 2016 that required hospitals and birthing centers to release a patient’s placenta to them if they request it, so that did help to make the process smoother for the client, for sure! We have the occasional technology hiccup, but it’s all made for a better, more simplified process for everyone.

As you know, we’re big fans of The Placenta Pill, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?

When a mom books our services, we do our best to make the process as easy as possible. The last thing a new mom needs is a stressful or complicated process. She receives a detailed preparation checklist that lets her know what to bring to her birth location, how to contact us, as well as answers to other frequently asked questions. Once baby is here, she will text or call her assigned specialist, who will pick up her placenta ASAP. We try to get the pills back to the client within 2-3 days, and we hand deliver those pills directly to the client, whether she’s still in the hospital or at home.

Everyone can benefit from placenta encapsulation! Our clientele includes teachers, celebrities, medical professionals, musicians, homemakers, realtors, and more. Our reviews speak of the positive results past clients have experienced; boosted breastmilk supply, improved mood, better energy, closer baby bonding, and faster healing time. While we can’t guarantee the same results for every mom, we know that hundreds of past clients have had a happier postpartum. We are so grateful for our clients and the care providers who continue to refer to us.

What’s next?
We plan to keep offering the same amazing services to moms in Dallas – Fort Worth. I think we are always refreshing and fine-tuning all of our processes to ensure the best experience for our clients.
