Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Velasco.
Hi Alexandra, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Unlike most photographers I know, I didn’t always have a camera with me as a child or grow up constantly taking photos. I did find a love for photography more in my teenage years, but never truly thought of pursing it as a career. The dream of pursing photography started back a few years ago when I was working as an accountant. After graduation and working in the profession for a few years, I just knew it wasn’t what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
My husband gifted me my first starter camera and I then reached out to a dear friend that so kindly mentored me. Soon after, my husband and I moved to the DFW area and I decided it was the perfect time to begin my journey of photography. I truly had no idea where to start, but I pushed myself far out of my comfort zone by going to styled shoots, reaching out to other photographers in the area, and just simply going for it and learning along the way.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been the furthest thing from a smooth road, but I am somewhat thankful for that! From moving to a new location, not knowing anyone and being clueless where to even begin – I had no idea that starting a business would be so challenging and wouldn’t get much easier. In the beginning, it was the challenges of building my portfolio and clientele while also meeting other photographers and finding a community of friends for support.
Although I am constantly striving to grow my clientele, I am now facing other challenges as well, such as bettering my client experience and knowledge within my profession. And then there is, of course, the challenges of imposter syndrome, constantly comparing yourself and your work to other amazing photographers, and feelings of just not being good enough – all things that don’t necessarily get talked about often.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Texas-based elopement and wedding photographer with a love for connection and serving my clients. I take pride in, not just showing up to the session or wedding day as a photographer, but as a friend. From inquiry to after delivery of the gallery, I strive to give my clients an unforgettable experience, while telling their story and capturing their day exactly how they envisioned it.
How do you define success?
Success for me is simply having a positive impact on my client’s life. Whether that is capturing one of the biggest day’s of their life or helping them see their beauty through the art of photography, I simply hope to be able to gift them a wonderful experience and photos full of beautiful memories that they will love looking back on for years to come.
