Rising Stars: Meet Gaby Dominguez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gaby Dominguez.

Gaby Dominguez

Hi Gaby, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
My journey in the barber industry started five years ago. I attended Williams Barber College in Fort Worth. I call Fort Worth home & decided this is where I want to grow, not only as an individual but as a barber. Being a female in this industry, in an industry that was mostly male dominant, has been a challenge, and in the beginning, it was pretty discouraging. As time went by, I had some of the best teachers/friends who I was never afraid to learn from. I worked two jobs and went to school in the afternoon. It was tough, but I made it work. I will say my work ethic played a huge role, all thanks to mom and dad for teaching me to put my all into everything I do; the support system I had at home was everything. First generation and coming from a traditional Mexican household, it was not common to step out of the common culture duties, but I did, and it has been one of the best things I’ve done. I’ve been blessed to have met people of many walks of life, great clients who became great friends, and I thank them for keeping me busy week after week. I love what I do, and all I can say is continuously do what makes you happy.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of my struggles was finding a reason why not to quit; when everything was going wrong, you would have to find that one reason and say, “This is what I meant to do; this is what I want.” It was not smooth sailing; I’ve always been very independent, so for me asking for help when I needed it was tough.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a barber, and I specialize in cutting men/boys hair, styling, and figuring out what best suits them.

I haven’t always been creative, but becoming a barber has definitely given me the freedom to learn and do as much as I can with hair! I am most proud of the work ethic that I carry.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice would be to always work hard; in this industry, every barber has a different techniques, different ways of teaching, and different ways of learning; there will always be a change in styles; just because someone does something different does not make you wrong. And last but not least, keep learning, never stop with the education, soak it all in.
