Exploring Life & Business with Erica Alexander of The Little Learning Preschool

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Alexander.

Erica Alexander

Hi Erica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I have an extensive background in the childcare industry since 2009 from teacher, Summer Camp Program director, daycare director, and childcare consultant. After a hiatus to explore other passions, I launched The Little Learning Preschool with my sister.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nothing really worth having ever comes easy- including entrepreneurship. It’s more than just clocking in 9-5 and collecting a paycheck. The struggle of finding funding to open a 12,000-square-foot facility while homeschooling my kindergartener then moving my family to a new city has been exhausting. There were the long days and nights and the anxiety of losing part of our household income when I closed another long-term business- thank God for my husband, Sean who has always supported my dreams, both emotionally and financially!

But I’ve seen it done before. I’ve watched my parents, sister, and close family friend build very successful childcare businesses despite the struggle. Entrepreneurship is in my blood, so despite the struggle, I’m convinced by something my dad once told me- “The payoff is greater than the pain!”

We’ve been impressed with The Little Learning Preschool, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am one of the owners of The Little Learning Preschool. I own this business with one of my sisters, and we pride ourselves in being a family business. You’ll often see our parents there with us- our dad is our head maintenance.

We are a private childcare facility providing care and education to little learners age 6 weeks to 13 years olds. We believe that all of our Little Learners our purposed with Big Futures, and we are honored to play a small role in helping them to discover that!

What matters most to you? Why?
Family matters most! One of my biggest fears going into business with my sister was that it could potential bring a wedge in our relationship. We have always been close, and knowing that business partnerships can sometimes go wrong, we have been committed to honoring each other in our communication, being upfront when we disagree, and striving to grow this business to support both of our households!

Ultimately, I know that this business will lay the groundwork for my family to thrive and prosper more than we ever have, and I get to show my children the same principles and values I witnessed in my parents.
