Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara DeBusk.
Hi Sara, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been a stylist for 14 years. I’ve worked a many traditional commission salons in the area and always felt held back, controlled, and unable to grow myself in an empowering environment. After 10 years of feeling lost, I thought moving into a suite would be my best option, and at the time, I suppose it was. After two years of again feeling lonely uninspired, I opened Tribe Salon and Spa. I was so fortunate to have a wonderful group of stylists who supported me, and had all felt the same way I had. Constantly wanting more in this career. I wanted to have a rental salon because I had not opened my mind to thinking outside the box. Now, we are a blended salon with renters and commission alike, both having freedom, flexibility, and work/life balance.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road by any means. We struggled with covid 19 and all the restrictions differing beliefs. Then, after surviving that, we were fortunate to have to ability to expand! But with growth comes pushback. Many stylists could not see our vision, so pushing past those obstacles and fears. We are now a firm group of extremely talented stylists who all want growth and abundance. We empower each other and continue to connect with other salons and stylists to elevate our beloved industry as a whole.

I think what is most surprising is that you can be just as successful as a commission stylist with our philosophy as an independent stylist. The truth is some people aren’t business-minded or don’t want the burden of the responsibilities that comes with being a business owner. That’s where we come in. We give you all the freedom and flexibility of being independent with the protections of being an employee. With the options of investing into the Salon or earning high commissions without hidden toxic business fees.
