Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Lyons.
Hi Brittany, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I designed my first space in January of 2015 as a part-time/side-hustle designer. Fast forward to today, and I just celebrated my three-year anniversary of full-time design work on September 1st. I didn’t know it while it was happening, but design was all around me in my early years as my parents flipped houses. They would purchase a home, fix it up, live there a few years, then sell it. I think, somehow, it became ingrained in me. I didn’t actually put the two together until a few years ago.
As I remained consistent in showcasing whatever projects I was able to complete, the word spread about my business. It spread so much that I was able to kiss my full-time job at UT Southwestern goodbye in 2020. Yep, smack in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was the best choice I could have made for myself, and I only wish I had done it sooner.
I went from decorating spaces in 2015 to actually designing spaces in 2018 when I worked on my first bathroom renovation. It was challenging but a new experience and I was grateful to have it. It was with two-bathroom renos, being completed in tandem, that I realized I wanted to do more than just select pretty pillows and sofas. Being able to take an outdated, non-functional space to something amazing resonated with me. The feeling is difficult to describe. Since then, I haven’t looked back. I still accept “furnishings only” projects, but majority of my work is either full home remodels or kitchen and bathroom renovations.
My goal with each project, whether redesign, renovation, or new construction, is to help clients experience self-care through peaceful, functional design. We accomplish this by curating spaces that are tailored to each client/family in terms of style, color, textures, etc. The space should ultimately be a place where they can rest and unwind from the chaotic blows of life outside their home.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. It’s getting smoother, but it certainly didn’t start that way. Understanding my target client and budgets has helped tremendously in my approach to accepting a client/project or not. Most of my struggles came from not having firm boundaries in place for myself and how I manage the business. A couple of years ago, I took some time and invested in contracts, clear forms, and documentation outlined processes and procedures and what client base I was trying to reach. I even took these boundaries a step further with turning off business notifications (emails/texts) on my phone.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Brittany Lyons Interiors?
My business in an interior design firm based in Dallas, TX. I specialize in full home remodels and kitchen/bath renovations with a transitional, colorful flare. I try to remain integral in all the work I do, and the firm is a concierge firm since we handle all aspects of the project, from sourcing to installation. I most proud of the referrals and repeat clients I receive. This lets me know that I am doing something right.
I want readers to know that hiring a designer should be done at the beginning (honestly, a part of the planning) of any renovation or new construction project. Don’t just ask me to come along at the end when you want a nice rug or curtains. I should be involved from the planning phase in order to help you optimize both the function and aesthetic of your space.
I offer services for new construction (all selections, design planning, space planning, etc.), remodels/renovations, redesign, painting, and flooring projects.
How do you define success?
Success, to me, is making a difference in the life of someone else and myself.
