Today we’d like to introduce you to Kylee Koranteng.
Hi Kylee, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, my name is Kylee love I’m a 22-year-old hairstylist in Dallas. I always knew I was destined to be a hairstylist. I would watch my grandma do all of her grandkid’s hair, and I would want to help her. I first started off playing with the oversized Bratz dolls, and I would braid their hair and just try to do different hairstyles I would see my grandma doing; then it went from me practicing on myself. Braiding my own hair or just doing different styles. Eventually, I got bored with that and started asking my older cousins if I could do their hair, and that’s when I knew I wanted to be a hairstylist. After graduating from Reagan Middle School in Grand Prairie, I decided to take my skills to the next level and go to an all-business school that had a cosmetology program. I attended Dubiski Career High School all 4 years and gained a lot of knowledge about the beauty industry. I took test after test to get my cosmetology license but failed twice. After failing, I was really discouraged and didn’t know what to do next. After graduating, I sort of lost faith in what I wanted to do. I decided to just work straight after high school until I figured out what was next. Upon working I ran into my old cosmetology teacher, Mrs. Garza, we had a conversation about my life’s direction and what I should be doing. She instilled in me that I am talented and shouldn’t give up on my dreams and what I was destined to do. After that encounter, I felt like god was telling me to not give up and to keep going, and that’s what I did.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning, it wasn’t because I had to figure out what I truly wanted to do. I was listening to other people instead of listening to myself and god. But once I knew what I was destined to do it was… Getting clients was really easy for me because I was very much dedicated to my work. I put a lot of passion and hard work into what I do, and others definitely saw that!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I do braids! I specialize in all different type of braids, but I’m mainly known for my knotless and bohemian braids. I’m most proud of my work and the passion behind it. When my clients sit in my chair, I want them leaving happy and loving their hair. Although I do know that sometimes when we, as hairstylists, do our best there are some people who are not satisfied and that’s okay but, in all honesty, I feel like my passion for my work is what sets me apart from others. I take so much pride in what I do because god has given me this talent.
What’s next?
My plans for the future is definitely moving into my own studio and hoping to start my own braiding tool collection! And hopefully relocating to a different city in the next year or two.
