Life & Work with Gracie Howard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gracie Howard.

Gracie Howard

Hi Gracie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Since 6th grade, I had my mind set to become a hairstylist when I got older. Little did I know I would be the owner of my own hairsuit! When I got my hair colored for the first time ever, I absolutely loved it (the hair), the salon environment, the people, everything! So, I kept getting my hair colored and I just loved it every time! Being in a salon felt very comforting. As a kid, I was into makeup and beauty and fashion, but I didn’t expect myself to go into a beauty profession. I also knew I didn’t want a career that involved me struggling in math and science. (Yes, hair involves math and science, but you don’t need to solve for x in hair!) So, I graduated high school in 2018 and attended cosmetology school that same year in August. I am now a salon suite owner, and I couldn’t love it more!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey to get to where I am has not been easy. Of course, nothing is going to be easy though. I started out as an apprentice after hair school in Frisco, which was great! I graduated from Wakeland, so I didn’t need to learn a new area. At the time, I hated being an apprentice. We were only cutting hair once a week on a weekday evening. I was definitely getting some great practice in, but it wasn’t enough for me and my continuing education. I felt like I wanted to be on the actual floor, taking clients and getting first-hand experience. I left the first salon and went to another that allowed me to actually be on the floor and take clients.

I loved working at my second salon! It was just me and this other stylist for a while, and the owner of the salon. But I wasn’t learning anything. I needed to learn color techniques since I originally was just going to be a cut-only stylist at my previous salon.

I eventually came to Denton after a little over a year of working at my second salon. I had a wonderful clientele that followed me to Denton, and I appreciate every single person who has helped me get to where I am today!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I mainly love doing haircuts, balayage, and any type of vivid/rainbow color! I’ve learned to create trippy and amazing rainbow prims in hair, and I think that is so cool! It’s always really nice to see your clients happy and excited about your work! I still really love my career, but there are definitely days where I wonder if I could’ve done something else. But in the end, when I go to work and prove to myself why I am a hairdresser, it reminds me why I chose to become a hairstylist. There are times where it’s easy to compare myself to others because I see some other amazing work, but comparing yourself to others is actually the worst you could do for your mental health. It takes away all your confidence and enjoyment and just overall brings you down. I’m still learning not to compare myself to these top hairstylists. it is hard, but it should determine if I still even want to be a hairstylist. Of course, I still want to be a hairstylist! I didn’t want to be your typical hairstylist. I wanted to be someone who would let a client think outside of the box, an alternative haircut or color for anyone! Or even a beautiful balayage for some blended action!

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
From my previous articles, I’ve mentioned my parents a million times, but I can’t not mention them! I’ve always been very close with them, and they’ve always supported me in the directions of life. Of course, I have amazing friends who support me by just following on Instagram, coming in as clients, and posting selfies! My clients, in general, play a HUGE role in my life! How? They’re my clients! I love them so much, and I appreciate each and every one of them! Having my clients in my chair lets me get to learn about people and their perspectives. I get to make friends and hang out while I do their hair! I get to grow while doing their hair, not just with hair, but as a person, I’m learning more and new things about everything with all of my clients! In my salon suite, I try to make everyone feel comfortable and cozy! I want the vibe to be positive and fun!

My extended family is also very supportive! They love seeing the pictures on Instagram and Facebook! My mom will share some of my posts, and I like reading the comments! It makes me feel good that I can help others feel good!
