Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Urtiaga.
Hi Kelly, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I first started practicing East Asian medicine as a Licensed Acupuncturist in San Antonio, TX, in January 2020 after receiving my master’s degree in acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine, becoming board-certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM), and receiving my licensed to practice issued by the Texas Medical Board. During my time in San Antonio, I worked in both private and community-style acupuncture clinics alongside other licensed acupuncturists and holistic practitioners. While I loved living and practicing in San Antonio, I felt as though my life was sitting at a plateau, and I was needing a change in environment and routine. In June 2022, I moved to Dallas to pursue a full-time acupuncture position at a community-style clinic. Several months later, I was introduced to Kari Ceitlin, owner of Enlighten Medspa, who was in search of a small business owner/acupuncturist to rent space alongside other wellness practitioners. My ultimate goal had always been to start my own acupuncture business one day, but I never pushed myself to pursue it. I always said, “I don’t have a background in business,” or “I can only have my own business if someone else runs it for me because I just have no idea what I’m doing.” I was limiting myself into thinking it was something I could only attain in the future. After months of contemplating and receiving several words of encouragement from friends and family, I ultimately decided to take a leap of faith and create my first small business, Sacred Healing Acupuncture.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely been a learning experience getting to where I am now, and I am continuing to learn more and more each day. While being a first-time business owner has been a very exciting opportunity, there are multiple pieces that make a business whole; some pieces I have had to educate myself on as a business owner, and other pieces I have learned to outsource and ask for support where I lack expertise. One of the biggest learning experiences has been allowing myself patience and not limiting myself from asking for support where and when it is needed. I have a tendency to try and wear as many hats as possible, so acknowledging when I need support for things like managing taxes and bookkeeping, for example, has been a humble but rewarding time of reflection.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business.
I am a licensed acupuncturist and certified herbalist specializing in acupuncture for women’s health and mental health. A large percentage of my patients seek acupuncture for fertility support, menstrual-related issues, and other women’s health conditions such as endometriosis, PCOS, and hormone imbalance. I also specialize in cosmetic acupuncture, a natural cosmetic treatment based on traditional Chinese medicine that focuses on improving the elasticity, complexion, and overall appearance of the skin by healing from the inside out. This treatment can help promote collagen to reduce the presence of fine lines and wrinkles, naturally lift the skin to decrease sagging, minimize puffiness, increase hydration, and much more!
What sets me apart from others is my treatment approach with acupuncture. When I’m treating my patients, I’m not just looking at their symptoms and primary reason for seeking treatment. I look at their entire being – mind, body, and spirit. I am looking not only at their health history but their life story as well. Was there a significant life event that took place around the time symptoms started arising? Are there current events creating stress or other emotions that are manifesting as physical symptoms? I take pride in educating my patients about how thoughts, past memories, and physical ailments are often correlated together, and when we can work through those mind and spirit blockages, the physical body can also progressively heal.
In addition to acupuncture, I also do integrative therapy work, including cupping, gua sha, herbal consultation/prescriptions, and LED light therapy.
What’s next?
I would love to have my own integrative clinic in the future! As my practice continues to grow, my goal is to expand into a larger office space that can consist of other like-minded practitioners in the health and wellness industry, such as a nutritionist and/or functional medicine doctor, lymphatic massage, IV drip therapy, holistic women’s health practitioner, and more.
