Meet Jennifer Zoll

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Zoll.

Jennifer Zoll, PT, MSPT, CBIS

Hi Jennifer, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I have been a licensed physical therapist for the past 19 years. My first 10 years were in geriatrics, which is where I found a love for working with neurologically injured patients. My last several years were in outpatient neuro, where I got to really expand my knowledge and skill set. First with Baylor Day Neuro FW and now with Zoll Neuro Rehab and Wellness. It is with Baylor that I helped pioneer a day neuro-intensive program focused on those with spinal cord injuries. After 5 wonderful years with Baylor, I decided to branch out on my own and start a non-profit and continue to work with the neuro population. I started a non-profit because I was tired of limitations set by insurances and that so many of my patients’ journeys are cut short when they have so much more potential. So many clients are cut loose from therapy too soon, which doesn’t allow for their full potential, increased level of independence, safety, and proper caregiver training. We do not take any insurances and are solely cash pay. We offer discounts and pro bono services for those that cannot afford it, and we provide therapy in their homes, so no need to find transportation. It has proven to work wonderfully as we can work with patients in their home environment and work on the struggles they have in their own home and not just a clinic setting. I will also be starting my third year of adjunct teaching Neuro at the Trinity River Campus at TCC PTA Program. Teaching and mentoring have been a passion of mine, and I will continue to encourage evidence-based teaching and the power of movement. I love promoting our profession and to be teaching our incoming clinicians all I have to offer in the field of neuro and basic patient care. I met my husband of 16 years in PT school at the University of Kentucky; we moved to FW in 2005 and have four beautiful daughters’ that keep us extremely busy with all their sports and school functions.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at first; learning the ins/outs of a non-profit has been the biggest struggle. Different rules, taxes, requirements than a typical business. This required lots of research on my end to make sure I was doing everything the correct way. From budgeting to creating a board of directors and holding quarterly meetings. Lots of things I learned along the way, with lots of help from some pretty amazing people in the field. We do recognize that clients are often restricted from the recovery journey due to insurance limitations, lack of specialized resources, and other burdens, including transportation and high costs of private care. ZNR is not driven by funding but are driven by our client’s recovery, and we direct our care towards patient’s conditions, prognosis, and progression.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have been a practicing physical therapist for 19 years and have offered the highest standards of treatment and patient care; I am committed to my client’s health and long-term wellness… I have seen so many changes in the industry from reimbursement issues, Medicare changes, work culture, etc. I just got tired of the quick turnarounds and discharges and not having the time to care for the patients the way I wanted to and the way they deserved to. That is why I created Zoll Neuro Rehab and Wellness, to provide individualized one on one care using the principles of neuroplasticity to optimize outcomes and maximize independence. I am Certified Brain Injury Specialist; I am certified LSVT Practioner for Parkinson’s. I am certified Level 1, 2, and advanced Trigger Point Dry Needling, Certified Kinesiotape Practioner, and NDT trained. My main specialty are working with adults and teens affected by paralysis from neurological injury due to spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, strokes, Parkinson’s, MS, Rett Syndrome, and other neurological conditions.

I am most proud that I have been able to run a successful non-profit and maintain a bustling, healthy, happy family. Work-life balance is hard to attain for many people, but since starting this new venture, I am able to be focused and present with each of my family and with work obligations.

I think what sets me apart from the rest is that I am not money-driven; I am driven by the results of my patients. I take the time to put my hands on them and truly listen to their needs and frustrations. I will be your biggest cheerleader, advocate, motivator, and shoulder to cry on. YOUR RECOVERY. OUR PRIORITY.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I would say I am resourceful; I can find what you need and usually find colleague that can help me with that need. Be it durable medical equipment, BOTOX, insurance, assistance with funding or obtaining equipment needed, etc. I have created wonderful networks of like-minded people that are always willing to help. I think being stubborn helps; telling me that I cannot do something is a strong motivator for me to prove them that there really isn’t anything I can’t do once I set my mind to it.

Strong compassion and empathy are important in this field; we are dealing with people that have had life-changing traumatic events; we are not there just to help them get stronger; we are there to help them through some of the hardest events in their lives. We cry when they cry, and laugh when they laugh, celebrate when they celebrate. It’s so important for these patients to be seen and heard.
