Daily Inspiration: Meet Jim Crye

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim Crye.

Jim Crye

Hi Jim, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started playing guitar live in bands around DFW when I was 15 in the late 80s. The 1st band was called KRY. We played at the famous Joe’s Garage in west Fort Worth where Pantera were regulars. My bands were heavily influenced by Pantera back then. That was probably the best learning experience that young metalhead could ever have. In 1998, we started a band called Lifesize. We recorded 2 great albums and had some great local success. When that fell apart in 2001ish I decided to pursue a college degree and graduated UTA 2007 with a BS in Economics. I still played locally in cover bands to help pay bills while I completed my studies.

Once I graduated, I found a job as a high school teacher for FWISD. This year will my 16th year as a teacher. I teach Government and Economics.

Teaching is a great job for musicians because off the time off (Summers). I fiddled around for a while with a few different genres, but ended up back in the metal scene with a kick *ss original band called Volume Dealer. We recorded 2 CDs, won a few contests, and made a great name for ourselves regionally. We lasted a few years. Around the same time, a writer for the DO and FWweekly – Christian McPhate – thought we had an interesting story and wrote a few articles about us. Those stories helped elevate our band around the area. Around 2016 I started playing in an Ozzy tribute band and then a Pantera tribute band, which lasted until Covid hit the scene. Since then, I have focused on recording, mixing, and producing music in my home studio. I have almost 30 rock instrumental songs completed. I do have a new band in the works.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a pretty smooth road so far. I always put 100% into whatever I am trying to accomplish because 2nd best in 1st loser. So, any obstacles that ever came up were never strong enough to divert me from my goal…except Covid.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work and focus have always been about being the best musician and guitar player I could be. I play rhythm and lead guitar. I can play a few different genres, but Iike playing metal and rock the most. I made a small name around town for being high school teacher who can shred. I am most proud of my accomplishments as a guitarist and a local musician.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters the most to me personally is my family. I’ve been married for 28yrs now to Dee, spawned two boys Thomas and Matthew – one whom is following my musical footsteps. I also have a grandson Ixcal.

Professionally what matters to me the most is providing instruction that is relevant and meaningful to young adults. Which, to put it mildly, can be a struggle.

Musician-wise what matters to me now is working to leave a legacy behind as a competent guitarist and musician.
