Hi Kevin, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
In 2016, I embarked on a transformative journey when I joined Toastmasters International in Little Rock, AR, becoming a proud member of High Noon Toastmasters—a fitting name since our meetings took place every Friday at 12 Noon. Just 3-5 months into my Toastmasters experience, a pivotal moment unfolded with the announcement of a world championship in public speaking.
Eager to challenge myself, I signed up for the contest, unaware that one of our club members, Chris, had previously competed on the grand stage in Washington, D.C., in 2015. Despite not clinching the victory, Chris brought a wealth of experience to the table, setting the bar high for our upcoming competition.
As we presented our speeches on the club level, I found myself in disbelief when the results were announced—I secured the first-place position, leaving Chris in second. This unexpected win propelled me to the area level for the state of Arkansas. In a surprising turn of events, Chris claimed the second-place spot once again, while I seized the first-place title.
However, the path to the world championship was challenging, allowing only the first-place winner from the regionals to advance. In a twist of fate, Mario Nolan Dillard from Memphis, TN, emerged victorious at the regional level. The dream of reaching the World Championship Of Public Speaking in Canada slipped away, leaving me feeling devastated and disheartened.
In the midst of my disappointment, my girlfriend at the time, Wendy (now my wife), posed a question that would change the course of my journey. “Why didn’t you share your own story?” she asked. I hesitated, feeling I lacked a compelling narrative. Wendy’s response, “What Got You Here Won’t Get You There,” resonated deeply within me.
Determined to grow and improve my speaking abilities, I took Wendy’s advice to heart. I sought the guidance of a speech coach, committed to honing my skills. That year marked a turning point—I spoke to over 30 businesses, companies, and organizations, unleashing a newfound passion for communication.
Today, as a world-class certified speaking coach, I empower business owners, companies, and professionals to master the art of speaking, navigate networking events with finesse, and craft the perfect elevator pitch. My journey from a local Toastmasters competition to a speaking coach is a testament to the power of resilience, continuous improvement, and the belief that every setback is an opportunity for a comeback.
