Today we’d like to introduce you to Celso & Jessica Hernandez.
Hi Celso & Jessica, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We are a family-owned business that unexpectedly began when our youngest daughter requested a very unique theme for her party, and we were unable to find props. My husband (Celso), who has several years and plenty of knowledge and experience in the CNC industry, decided to create the prop himself. He designed, cut, sanded and we both painted this prop. After having created what would later become our first event prop that would be used in our first business post. We began receiving inquiries from family and friends to create certain wood items and signs. Being a stay-at-home mom whose youngest child was now attending school full time and was used to constantly being busy, I wanted to be able to help support our family financially but knew that being new to the DFW area, I needed to have flexibility in my schedule. After a few weeks of finally taking into consideration the idea that was brought up to us by family and friends, we took the huge leap of opening our IG business account. Within the first week of having our business account, we made our first sale. Before we knew it, we had several requests for a variety of wood props and signs. We have now created a wide variety of wood and acrylic items that are not only for events or event planners but for photography studios, storefronts, mobile vendors, and other small businesses. This business venture has allowed us to accomplish many goals, and, in the process, we have met other business owners, have created an amazing network of friends where we all help and support each other.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest obstacles was being new in a completely different state and not really knowing how or where to start this business. We had never owned or operated a business prior to DFW Wood Creations. We both had to learn and research many aspects of the event prop industry including how to properly price and advertise ourselves. Another obstacle has been learning how to restructure our time accordingly and balance our family time and business time aside from our kids’ extra-curricular activities.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Prior to initiating our business and relocating to DFW area I (Jessica) obtained a degree in the medical field and was an instructional assistant for the medical assisting program in our local college. Once covid was initiated, I became a full-time stay-at-home mom. My husband (Celso) specializes in the CNC industry. He is also a quick learner and has always had a passion for hands-on projects. We are both most proud of our ability to work as a team not only when it comes to our family and marriage but now also when it comes to our business that we both have proudly started together. Our business has become one of our greatest accomplishments, and we hope that we can help inspire anyone who has had self-doubt about starting a business, goal, or anything because they are scared of the unknown.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
This business has taught us many lessons. One of the biggest lessons we have learned is not to be afraid of the unknown. We have always known that we wanted to start a business, however our fear of not knowing if we would succeed delayed our dream of someday becoming business owners. But it’s never too late to start your business or lifelong dream. Another lesson we have learned is that not everyone will be your client and that is ok. Some will question your pricing and will undervalue your work. However, just because 1 client out of many feels this way does not mean that we should question the quality of our work or abilities.
