Today we’d like to introduce you to Juna Uehara.
Hi Juna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
Living in the State was a lifelong dream of mine since childhood. When I achieved this goal by relocating to New York in 2017 after completing my education, the supportive community around me reinforced the belief that nothing is impossible. Motivated by this mindset, I began my journey in the fashion industry as an international makeup artist. Art and fashion have always been my passion, and I am dedicated to portraying myself as more than just a Japanese artist – I aim to represent the unique cultural identity of Okinawa. My work is frequently influenced by the rich tapestry of local culture and art in Okinawa.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a challenging yet incredibly rewarding journey as a freelance makeup artist. The nature of this work is dynamic, with the unpredictability of job opportunities; some months may be quiet, while others are overwhelmingly busy. This uncertainty has taught me resilience as I’ve learned to navigate through the highs and lows of freelancing.
When I started to working in this industry, being Asian artist, I have encountered instances where people have underestimated me or tried to take advantage of my appearance. These experiences, however, have contributed significantly to my personal growth. Over the past few years, I’ve become more resilient and have developed a stronger sense of self.
Despite the challenges, the journey has connected me with remarkable individuals whom I can trust and respect. These positive connections have reinforced my gratitude for being able to pursue my dream job as a makeup artist. I constantly remind myself that setbacks are often followed by opportunities for growth, and I eagerly anticipate the positive moments that lie ahead.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a makeup artist primarily focused on the fashion industry, where I thrive in crafting creative makeup looks that reflect my personal style. Collaborating with a team to bring these imaginative concepts to life is what I love most about my work. A standout moment in my career was the Nikon campaign shoot in 2023, where I had the opportunity to showcase my skills and distinctive style confidently. This project set me apart as an international artist, proudly representing my Okinawan heritage and infusing my work with the rich cultural influences that inspire my creativity. My identity, cultural background, and artistic style seamlessly intertwine, and I take pride in drawing inspiration from my Okinawan roots.
What are your plans for the future?
I am planning for a future that involves expanding my work internationally, showcasing not only my skills but also the rich cultural tapestry of my hometown. As a makeup artist, I aspire to bring the unique elements of my hometown’s culture to a global audience. My biggest career goals is to collaborate with Rihanna, a prospect that excites me greatly. Working with her would undoubtedly be a pinnacle moment in my career, and I eagerly look forward to the day when this aspiration becomes a reality.
