Check Out Don Richard’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Don Richard.

Don Richard

Hi Don, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Layoffs were a big part of making my decision to start my business. I began doing side gigs to earn a few extra dollars. In 2015, a friend asked if I wanted to give him a hand with bagging up clothes for a person that was relocating. I worked for 45 minutes. Since most movers earn a 2-hour minimum (and occasionally receive tips), I was able to walk away with $100. $100 in 45 minutes. Most jobs won’t pay $100 after a 7- or 8-hour shift, so a light bulb came on. I told myself that if I could do that every day, then I would be just fine. A few months after that, I was introduced to Robert. Robert is a professional mover, and he is still the best mover that I know. I began going on assignments under his business name. My original thought was that he was only giving me work because I needed the money. He was, and he was also getting paid for the labor that I was doing. Another light bulb came on. I realized that he didn’t have to be present to make money. I learned that it’s all about the billing, and you can have a presence in multiple places if you do it right. Robert is a great teacher. I had the privilege to watch how he worked and the do’s and don’ts. I eventually branched out on my own. There is not a single day that I go without thinking about how much he has shown me. Thank you, Robert.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road was pretty smooth. I started my business with just a DBA and a dolly that I was already using to assist my mentor with moving jobs. Primarily, I only helped with moving labor, so there was little or no overhead costs.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a high school graduate and attended a 4-year university as well as real estate school. I have had many jobs in customer service and banking, but when times are tough, and we go through layoffs, we begin to look for lower-paying jobs. At one point, I was a busboy and an inexperienced janitor. Just trying to keep a roof over my head.

What matters most to you?
God matters to me most. Wisdom, strength, and courage. In terms of business, it is making sure that our customers love us and want us to come back.
