Taylor McCoy

Hi Taylor, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started doing hair around the age of 13. I had no interest in doing it for a living. Growing up in the salon alongside my mother, the first-born child, watching and learning became an inevitable part of my childhood. As time passed, I started to quick weave my hair at 13, and before you know it, I was learning on YouTube, which I call “YouTube University”. What started as practice on friends, family, and coworkers soon evolved into a skill set I didn’t know I possessed.

In 2016 I was stilling doing hair as hobby, but my childhood dream was to become a teacher. Still trying to reach college to make that happen, God had other plans. During my time in the corporate world that led to its challenges and limitations it caused me to have a pivotal moment. Faced with being the youngest, overworked, and overwhelmed worker. I took a medical leave, and I started doing hair full-time to make ends meet.

That “leave” turned into me being an entrepreneur. As time went by working for myself, I became financially stable.

From quick weaves and sew-ins, I stumbled upon crochet braids. I did a young lady crochet braid style, and I was clueless about it, so I turned to the virtual classrooms of YouTube. Discontent with the conventional approach to crochet braids, I turned to God for prayer. Miraculously, God guided me transforming my perspective on crochet braids.

I did not like the big knots, big braids, and uneven braid patterns. I asked God to guide me and give me a technique. He did just that! As I perfected this newfound technique, a remarkable shift occurred. Clients with alopecia and thinning hair sought my expertise. What initially surprised me became a testament to my resilience and faith. I embraced Philippians 4:13, trusting that through Christ’s strength, I could overcome any challenge. Each client with alopecia or thinning hair became an opportunity to redefine my brand.

Nearly a decade later, I find myself revamping the perception of crochet braids. Through the same technique that initially perplexed me, I not only create stunning styles but also provide a transformative solution for those dealing with alopecia and thinning hair. This journey is just beginning, and I’m excited for the adventures that lie ahead!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Navigating the challenges of my hairstyling journey, one significant hurdle emerged – my workspace. As the demand for alopecia and thinning hair services increased, creating a professional spa environment became increasingly complex. Recognizing my clients’ need for privacy and tranquility, especially considering the vulnerability tied to their hair conditions, I was determined to provide a secure haven.

In response, I initially transformed a space in my home to meet these requirements. However, as my clientele expanded, staying discreet became impractical. God knew what he was doing. I prayed for the ideal location, and that’s when I stepped into the “suite life.” Little did I know, it wasn’t as seamless as it seemed. Despite the challenges, I persisted, moving four times within a year, each transition leading to a suite.

Talk about a test of faith! With each move, not only did my physical location change, but so did my mindset, confidence, and, yes, even my faith. The underlying challenge wasn’t just about finding the right workspace; it was about fully trusting in God’s plans and his will for my life. Despite the uncertainties and the need to continually adapt, I embraced the evolution, recognizing that each step was a testament to my unwavering faith in the journey laid out before me.

We’ve been impressed with Tay The Perfectionist LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I used to label myself merely a “Braider” until a profound conversation with a wise individual altered my perspective. Encouraging me not to confine my identity, I delved into introspection and prayer. This contemplation birthed my current title as a Natural Thin/Alopecia Hair Specialist & Master Crochet Stylist, now complemented by a Healing and Restoration Growth Collection product line.

My mastery of crochet braids over the years, I can install various hair types with my unique one-knot technique bestowed upon me by God. Beyond aesthetics, my focus extends to providing full coverage for alopecia and facilitating hair restoration. As an added benefit, I handcraft 100% natural oils, devoid of chemicals or preservatives, promoting hair regrowth.

What sets me apart is not just the longevity of my crochet braids—lasting up to 16 weeks—but the foundational solidity that ensures not a strand of hair is lost during wear. Operating as a full-service salon, I offer comprehensive services, including style customization, color blending, takedowns, steam hair treatments, and a selection of premium hair. Versatility is key, allowing clients to effortlessly switch between hairstyles.

Even in the retail space, I share God’s word through the incorporation of scriptures on each product, conveying messages of God’s divine healing, goodness, and promises.

My proudest moments arise when doubt surfaces and God’s encouragement reinforces my capabilities. Continuously seeking knowledge, I aspire to teach others my craft, recognizing the journey from where I started to where I stand today as a testament to answered prayers and unwavering love from Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The most crucial qualities for my success are transparency, love, and a willingness to change. Embarking on this journey at a young age, I navigated through trial and error, prioritizing honesty over the common “fake it until you make it” approach. God’s approval mattered, and being transparent was my way of staying true. Embracing change was essential; learning from experiences and client feedback allowed me to evolve professionally. Love has been my guiding force, ensuring a respectful and compassionate approach to both clients and the learning process. Remaining humble and professional, I steer clear of letting success alter my perception of others, always valuing integrity over pride.
