Today we’d like to introduce you to Yusefa Sutherland.
Hi Yusefa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in Hawaii, and as a young child, I would massage my uncle’s and aunt’s feet. People would tell me you have great hands. I moved to California with a tragic incident in my life. Turning into what would start my 32-year journey in spa services. I got a job at 18 for a chiropractor running therapy machines. Always massaging patients’ backs before applying therapy. The chiropractor said, “You should go to massage school.” So that is what I did. I finished massage school in ten months and began my career. I had a very satisfying career as a massage therapist working full time at a holistic spa, having many clients, and went into teaching massage at a local school. Years later, I found myself living in Lawrence, Kansas. The dean and chancellor were my clients from KU. My name is Yusefa, but I was known as “the Sefa.” When clients would call the spa looking for me years later, asking for “the Sefa.” Years forward and I met my husband who was from Dallas. When I moved here 10 years ago, I went to esthetic school. Looking to still work in the same spa setting. I began my work at Merum fave bar two years ago. I love what I do, and this can be shown in my work and the many clients I have now. I still love massage and put it into practice in all my facials. It’s not just a facial to me but an experience you receive coming to see me at Merum.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road, through loss of family to not finishing high school until later in life. My life has been challenging to say the least. Struggling with depression and anxiety has also been hard. And the biggest challenge has been my dyslexia, learning difficulties has always been hard on my life.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I think what sets me apart from other estheticians is my truly caring about my clients. Wanting my clients to have the best experience they can have in an hour session. I specialize in massage therapy, facial massage, neck and shoulders. I am also honest with people, not just saying what they want to hear or telling them how to take care of their skin based on a fad.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
By working with Merum Face Bar and coming to see me is a way of supporting me. Collaborating in Educational support to learn more about skincare and the newest technologies and ingredients. To help me achieve further goals. One of my goals is to work for a big skincare company. I truly have a passion for skincare.
