Today we’d like to introduce you to Rennice Kerebi.
Hi Rennice, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m Rennice Kerebi a 17-year-old who runs her own business as a self-taught hairstylist; I do everything from wigs, locs, braids, and more. I’ve been doing hair a little under 4 years, and it has to be one of the biggest blessings God has gave me so far. Growing up, I was raised by a single mother who worked hard to make ends meet, so getting my hair done was always a luxury since it wasn’t something we could easily afford. My mother, being a single parent, didn’t always have the time to do my hair since she had to juggle several things, such as her upcoming trucking company, my little brother, and simply putting food on the table and keeping the lights on.
That being said, just like any typical girl, you feel nothing but pure joy and happiness after getting your hair done. Confidence through the roof cause all you can see is a beautiful young girl when you look in the mirror. Which should be a typical feeling you get once your hair is done, but mine was quite the opposite.
Each and every time I got out of my hairstylist chair, I questioned my beauty as a young girl. Since all I would hear as I was getting my hair done is… “Your hair is too nappy,” “You need to get a perm,” “If you’re going to keep your natural hair, you need to get a relaxer before coming to me” As a young girl who was learning to love herself this remarks where quite hurtful, to the point I know longer thought I was beautiful.
Soon enough, I had had enough of the verbal abuse and decided to take matters into my own hands; I had told my mom I wanted to learn how to do my own hair. I first started by watching a few YouTube videos and started to practice on my mother. I quickly got the gist of it and was able to braid my own hair with the help of my mom parting the back of my head. Soon enough people where asking where my mother and I got our hair done, and I was beyond proud to be the one to say, “I did it myself.” I then moved on and started doing family and friends hair, and was getting better each and every time.
Little did I know this was the start of my new beginning; my work was so good I caught the attention of my local beauty supply “Terrinika’s Beauty Supply” who offered me my own space to braid in (during the summer). A just like that I had my first shop at only 16 years old where I learned how to properly price my work, and be confident within my prices, along with networking with other people, and how to provide professional and kind customer service.
Once school started back up, I went back to braiding from home and brought all the new skills I had learned while having my own shop. Along with my own negative past experiences, I’ve had with my previous hairstylist and used it as a learning experience to ensure I give my clients the proper customer service and quality hairstyles they deserve. I have been able to slowly but steadily grow my business and just reach 500 followers today 12/30/2023!
I just know God has more in store, and can’t wait to see how far he will take me in the journey I continue to venture in.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Just like any business, I’ve had my own struggles; my main struggle was getting myself out there and gaining clientele at first.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
