Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn and Joe Kahan.
Dawn and Joe, please share your story with us.
After losing our beloved Lab, Bo to cancer in 2014 we went on a fact-finding mission to understand what we might have done to prevent it. We owned several dogs prior, but Bo was truly a family member. Dawn was a long time volunteer elderly patient advocate and knew what to research. She found out that they had done everything wrong; from giving him rawhides to feeding him what they were told was good food.
After a few months of struggling what to do with their new knowledge, Dawn and Joe finally decided to open a Pet Store. Our mission and goal is to better the lives of pets and their owners. Simply put, we honestly believe that we can make a difference and our business is a direct reflection of that passion. We love what we do as much as our owner’s love their pets.
We love that our store is different from anything anyone has ever done before. The store centers on a learning experience, where people learn what Dawn says “They don’t know what they don’t know”. All the products and services have a purpose and are designed to support what they learn. We are this country’s first and only Pet Wellness Store which means people never have to worry about unhealthy products; even the services are holistic. The store focuses on teaching all 4 areas of wellness (food, hygiene, exercise and mental awareness), not just food and/or toys.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course, it has been easy, that is why anyone can do it… 😉
Of course not, we have worked very hard to earn peoples trust. Our business is based on trust because if we don’t have it, people are unlikely to want to listen and take our advice. We have 1000’s of hours of the learning experience and even go so far as to get staff certified as pet nutritionist. We have and still put in 80 -100 hours a week working to build or improve the business.
One of our biggest accomplishments, which we like to brag about, is our number of customers. The number is “0”. We tell chamber members and other business owners that we don’t have a single customer but rather lots of friends. It truly does make you smile and it gives us the best stories every day when driving home.
Please tell us about Earthwise Pet Southlake.
Many Pet stores try to claim that they focus on your pet’s wellness but yet they sell and promote products and/or services that are known to have health issues for the animal. Our Pet Wellness store dedicates all its resources to ensure that it is only providing all natural and holistic products and services to benefit the pet. Natural foods are anything that is consumed or ingested that do not contain added color, artificial flavors, or synthetic substances.
Holistic is the treatment of the whole pet, taking into account mental and social factors, as well as any physical symptom of an issue or disease. This means that all employees are educated to understand and teach customers the four areas of pet wellness (food, hygiene, exercise, and social/mental stimulus). Only products and services that satisfy 1 or more of these 4 areas will allow to be sold. A Pet Wellness Store must provide all 4 areas of wellness as well as provide customers, not pets, with a learning center in order to claim that they are truly a Pet Wellness Store.
What are we most proud of?
All the people and their furry family members that we have helped over the last couple of years since we opened. Also all our new and great friends. Lexi, our Lab getting “2017 Best Greeter in DFW” by a local magazine. Most people know her as “Lexi is one and only Test Lab”.
What sets us apart from any other Pet store? We treat everyone like a friend. We laugh, we joke and we just plan have fun with everyone. Matter of fact, everyone expects to come and leave with a smile and a few laughs. Their pets know they will have a great time with Lexi too.
