Life & Work with Keaira Tatum

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keaira Tatum.

Keaira Tatum

Hi Keaira, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Keaira Tatum. I am a dance coach and cosmetologist. Hairstyling sparked my interest when I was in about 8th grade when my friends used to ask me to do their hair all the time. From then on, it was something I truly loved to do. But because my high school did not have the cosmetology endorsement program, I was placed in the education endorsement program at the school. Although this was definitely not my first choice, the program still allowed me to be creative and express myself, which, in the long run, ended up leading me back to doing hair. After high school, I went to college for a semester and realized that education was no longer something of interest to me, and I wanted to focus more on hair, so I left and made my way to Ogle, the School of Hair, Skin, and Nails. And since February of 2020, I’ve been KDanyel! Now, I’ve been doing hair professionally for going on 4 years at the end of this year.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being an aspiring hairstylist certainly has its challenges. Personally, navigating through school and dealing with the impact of COVID disrupted my learning, especially as a kinesthetic and visual learner. Overcoming the hurdle of adapting to online and book-based learning required persistence.

Another significant challenge revolves around the dynamic of gaining and losing clients. Striking a balance between meeting the expectations of clients and maintaining personal satisfaction is an ongoing struggle, crucial for cultivating a stable clientele.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a cosmetologist specializing in hairstyling, my expertise lies in creating exquisite extended ponytails (dubbed “Thee Ponytail Finesser”). Beyond ponytails, I excel in silk presses, wig installs, and more. What sets me apart in my field is not just my technical skill but also my personable nature, deep knowledge, passion, and meticulous approach to my craft. Ensuring my clients’ hair is in optimal health is a top priority, reflecting my genuine care for both their hair and their well-being.

For me, it’s not solely about financial gain; I am driven by a sincere love for my work. Guiding clients in proper hair care and recommending suitable products is integral to my practice. What truly distinguishes me is this holistic approach to hairstyling. I take immense pride in my journey of growth, my eagerness to learn, and the meaningful connections established with my clients. These elements collectively define my professional identity and contribute to the fulfillment I find in my craft.

What do you think about happiness?
I find immense joy in waking up each day to pursue my passion – a true blessing for which I express gratitude to God. This passion revolves around hair and creativity, witnessing my envisioned styles come to life. Equally fulfilling is the happiness reflected in my clients’ smiles upon seeing the final results, indicating their genuine love for their hair.
