Exploring Life & Business with Autumn Philip of Slime Land

Today we’d like to introduce you to Autumn Philip.

Autumn Philip

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Slime Land started initially after slime was banned in my house after one of the kids got it on the back seat of my car (it NEVER came out). After some time, I decided to look for a place to take the kids to make some slime, but it didn’t exist. Eventually, we came up with Slime Land. Months and countless slime recipes later, I finally figured out a washable recipe and created an experience that would be educational and fun for any age. In 2020 we opened our first location in Woodbridge, NJ and it was off to an amazing start. Throughout the years we have made impact in many communities with our Slime Experience. Slime Land has formed several partnerships with businesses, special needs programs, and schools in the communities local to our locations.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Entrepreneurship is never a smooth road; we have come across many speed bumps. Our biggest struggle is gaining more exposure, just like any other small business. Outside of that, leasing out spaces in commercial malls is no easy task without a huge following. Two of our locations prematurely closed due to being replaced by national brands that offered more for our space. The hardest time during these times was figuring out a way to still serve our customers and keep the business running. This struggle in particular motivated us to start mobile party services which then lead us to doing bigger events such as expos, school programs, carnivals, and more.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Slime Land?
What sets us apart from others is that our slime is not only washable and non-toxic, but we offer an educational experience. As an educator, expanding knowledge is very important to me, especially when it comes to children. I am proud to have created an innovative educational experience that all ages can enjoy, along with a stress-free environment. Catering to everyone’s needs has been such a delight; being able to offer a place where the visually impaired, autistic, and special needs kids of ALL ages can enjoy is beyond rewarding. Slime has many benefits, and to be able to hone in on those is something we have yet to see being done in this industry. We offer programs to help with different therapies, trauma care, STEM/STEAM, and youth entrepreneurship. At our Town East location we offer Slime Experience where you can pick your own base, color, and toppings to completely customize your own slime, birthday parties, and tons of slime and slime kits to take home. We also offer mobile parties here in the entire DFW area, where we come to you and customize the entire experience to fit your needs.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was very observant and outspoken. Although respectful, I made sure how I felt was known and took my time to learn about whatever interest me. I loved learning about my Caribbean culture, math, science, my HUGE family, and dancing was my passion. Through high school I started developing the like for cosmetology and ending up pursuing that prior to graduating high school. I also got my certification in early childhood education. Fast forward right before Covid. I got my cosmetology educators license and open Slime Land within six months of each other as well as helped to launch a salon in my area. I always stayed busy and learning about whatever I liked at the moment and my hardest to master it. That’s exactly what I’m doing now but with Slime, something no one in my life including myself thought I would ever do! For as long as I can remember, I’ve always had issues with textures. Certain things touching my hands or feet would absolutely freak me out. I always washed my hands and even as a toddler would cry if my shoes got dirty. Even up to a few years ago, I still washed the dishes with gloves because I couldn’t stand to feel the different textures touch my hand. Slime honestly helped me tremendously though that. I actually used a hand stirrer when we first opened it because I still was struggling with textures issues. But now I have no issues getting my hands dirty with the kids at all, and plus since our slime isn’t that sticky (still super stretchy) that makes it even easier to work through!
