Today we’d like to introduce you to Otis Perkins.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am originally from Dallas, Texas, and my passion for chiropractic care stems from my personal experiences. Growing up in Dallas, I played a lot of sports, mainly 14 years of Texas Football, but unfortunately, this led to severe stingers where severe burning pain radiated while my arm was paralyzed for a few minutes the first time at 12 years old and 8 or 9 times a day throughout high school along with degenerative issues in my neck at a young age. The constant fiery electric pain made it challenging to even sit through classes during my time at Dallas Christian High School. Despite these challenges, I persevered and went on to pursue higher education at the University of Central Arkansas.
During my college years, I received a Bachelor’s degree in Physics with an emphasis on Biology and a Minor in Chemistry. I was planning to design and build robotic prosthetic limbs, combining my interest in technology and medicine. It was during my final semester of college that I had a life-altering encounter with a chiropractor.
This chiropractor went over my X-rays with me for the first time in my life, revealing the reason behind my arm paralysis whenever I tackled while playing football. Additionally, I learned that I had broken my second neck bone at some point in my life. I vividly remembered a moment when I attempted a backflip and landed on my neck, resulting in a prolonged period of seeing white but there were some other possibilities.
Prior to this encounter, I had already taken the MCAT and worked as an EMT, exploring different career paths in the healthcare field. However, I had never considered chiropractic until my chiropractor recommended Parker University, which happened to be located just 20 minutes away from my mom’s house. Intrigued by the possibility of a natural healing approach, I decided to visit the campus and instantly fell in love with the philosophies and practices I encountered.
During my orientation visit, I came across a copy of “Chiropractic Textbook” by Stephenson, which deepened my understanding of the body’s incredible design and its innate ability to heal. The concepts discussed in the book resonated with me, and I became convinced that chiropractic care was the path I wanted to pursue.
I started classes at Parker University, beginning my journey towards becoming a chiropractor just one week after graduating in Arkansas. While attending Parker, I faced some challenges, particularly with finding chiropractors willing to adjust me due to the severity of my X-ray findings. However, one exceptional intern provided me with life-changing adjustments, and I knew it was exactly what I needed. This experience fueled my passion for chiropractic care and motivated me to help others in the same way.
I have been a practicing chiropractor for the past 6 years licensed in Oregon and Texas, Three years ago, I took a leap of faith and started my own chiropractic office called “Healing Humans.” The name has a bar note over it to represent repetition of humans healing humans where we help heal people so they can go on to heal others. My ultimate goal is to empower individuals to lead healthier lives through restoring natural physical design.
Looking back on my journey, I am grateful for the challenges I faced and the resilience I developed. Discovering the power of chiropractic care has shaped me into the compassionate and dedicated chiropractor I am today. I am honored to make a positive impact in the lives of others and continue to learn and grow in my field.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nothing about being a chiropractor is easy, but it becomes a lifestyle which makes everything better. There is a lot to learn that they can’t teach in school even if they tried. Wanting to help everyone and running a business don’t always go hand in hand, but I have really been blessed along the way.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Healing Humans offers natural healing through many different treatments and therapies. We do full-body biophysics-based adjustments to form the posture and shape it to work with gravity rather than resist it. We do Magnetic Field therapy for brain trauma and cellular healing. We do Neuro-Muscular electrical stimulation to train damaged nerves to function properly or significantly help with acute pain. We have 2 types of Radial Pressure Shock wave to heal arthritis and reduce tension in almost any area of the body. We also offer most physiotherapy and rehabilitative therapies. These things work together to get people feeling better naturally and very efficiently. I am very proud of the quality of care and efficiency that our patients receive and our ability to provide positive outcomes in the majority of cases. It is best to come for prevention but when you’re in need we are there for you.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
There’s always a little risk involved with living, but being healthy is worth taking risks for. I think I’m probably a bigger risk taker than most, but if you have a bigger purpose, the risks seem minimal
