Today we’d like to introduce you to Bex Boado.
Hi Bex, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Denver, Colorado, and am the oldest of two daughters. The first spark of my passion for the arts occurred early on in my youth. If I could recall, from the very first moment, I was able to pick up and hold a pencil. I first figured out that I could turn my talent into a business was in the first grade when I traded portraits of my peers for candy, money, or parts of their lunch that day. As I grew older, my parents noticed my passion for the arts and heavily supported me in my endeavors, along with my art teachers and peers. I would find my art displayed on the walls of local coffee shops and entered into various competitions. I don’t ever recall winning said competitions, but being a part of it all was more than enough. It was in 2018, in the middle of my senior year of high school, that I moved to Austin, Texas. Shortly thereafter, I found my way to Dallas and slowly made my way over to Fort Worth, where I currently reside with my partner.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not quite. Since my art is a direct reflection of my character and experiences, life sometimes gets in the way, leaving me in a rut of sorts or, rather, I get overwhelmed by a sudden burst of energy and urge to create. These past couple years have been especially hard for me due to personal reasons, which had led to a hiatus. It’s also worth mentioning that my pursuit in a degree in Physics has also put a damper on my creative endeavors. Due to these circumstances, I’ve been unable to take my art as seriously as I would have liked. I’ve since taken a break from college due to financial reasons and have committed myself to my art in the meantime. Hopefully, that will change in the near future as it’s been a lifelong dream of mine to work and make a living as a full-time artist.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Art, to me, is creation in its simplest form. I dissect a piece of myself to leave it out for consumption. For the possibility of misinterpretation and inevitability of judgment. Each and every one of my pieces carries a part of my character, whether intentional or not. To understand my art is to truly see my being strewn out on canvas in its most raw and pure form. As a traditional artist, I have two main mediums: ink and oil paint. My style can be best described as surrealism with heavy Eastern European and Japanese influence. I’ve been told that my work can be easily identified with its ethereal visuals and horror-esque themes.
Apart from my creative work, I also do some freelance modeling on the side to build my portfolio, but it’s mostly for fun.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I don’t see myself being truly content unless I have completely dedicated myself to one of my passions, surrounded by the people I love and being able to support them. The joy from being able to give back to those whom I care about and being able to live out the rest of my life as a creative is more than enough to inspire me to continue down the path I travel today. I love my family dearly. Without them, I wouldn’t be the woman I am today, doing what I do, loving the things the way I do. They completely shaped the way I view life and have been there with me through every step of the way. My partner is also my number one fan and my biggest supporter. If it weren’t for him, I don’t think I would be as consistent with my art as I am currently. He’s one of the biggest reasons why I even attempt to pursue a career in art during this break from my degree, and I’ll be forever grateful for him. They are what matters most to me.
