Today we’d like to introduce you to Naoyasu Mera.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised in Japan. I studied photography in college. Due to my mother’s profession as a fashion stylist, I was familiar with fashion from a young age. I wanted to visually capture fashion beautifully, which led to the start of my career as a fashion photographer. Later, aspiring to become a globally recognized photographer, I moved to New York, the hub of world entertainment.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The language barrier was the most challenging aspect for me. I have confidence in my photography skills, but communication ability is also crucial for photographers. If I couldn’t accurately convey what I wanted to capture to my team, I couldn’t take good photos. I consider fashion photography to be like a team sport. Haring tactics with everyone is absolutely essential. Now, I manage by drawing pictures or gathering references, but I’m striving to improve my ability to verbalize my ideas.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a photographer and videographer. I place tremendous emphasis on teamwork in fashion photography, recognizing that it takes a collaborative effort to create striking visuals. As the conductor of the team, I am committed to orchestrating the collective talents of models, stylists, makeup artists, and hairstylists to achieve a cohesive vision.
In my opinion, “beauty” is a cornerstone of fashion photography. While being attuned to current trends and societal shifts, I firmly believe that true fashion imagery must emanate a sense of beauty, transcending mere trends.
I also believe that the visual impact of a single photograph is very important. At the same time, in my editorial work, there are many emotions and themes hidden within, akin to reading a novel. I would be delighted if people could discover and appreciate those elements.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I have never been to Dallas. I have no idea about Dallas.
I love New York for its diverse coexistence of people. Being surrounded by various perspectives and ideas is always enriching and a constant source of learning for me. However, I dislike the cold weather in New York.
