Today we’d like to introduce you to Gwendolyn Pitts.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Everyone loves flowers, myself included. It wasn’t until a prom flower emergency that I discovered I also loved designing flowers. At the time I worked for a broker in the Dallas area, selling insurance. A nice office job. Secure. Monday through Friday. I was a realist.
However, that all changed when I found myself throwing together a presentation bouquet for my son’s date the day of the dance. I had no idea what I was doing but managed to put together something pretty. It turned out better than I had expected and she loved it.
Many dances and proms followed for family and friends. I enjoyed designing flowers for all of them (after the day job, of course).
Fast forward a few years and I’m designing my first wedding, for this same son and his bride-to-be. The flowers and centerpieces were beautiful and the couple happily wed. I loved every moment of the experience; from the initial inspiration to the final design, I was hooked!
I also knew if I were to pursue this passion as a career I would need a knowledgeable foundation to build on.
So, for the next few years, I immersed myself in all aspects of the floral industry. I briefly worked for a flower shop, then a busy event and design company, even a floral wholesaler. During this time I worked alongside some of Dallas’s top designers, studying the mechanics and techniques of the craft, all the while building my confidence and improving my skills.
Freelance events followed which led to my first large corporate event for a New York designer. It was this designer who encouraged me to go for it. I was ready.
Bloomzies by Gwen was launched and continues to grow today. Wedding trends and styles change, but love stories are everlasting! I am honored to be part of expressing these stories through floral design. Best job ever!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Sure, there were obstacles to overcome. The Dallas market is inundated with talented designers, which can be intimidating.
As a somewhat shy person by nature, it was initially difficult to promote myself. For the first few years, I would defer to the reviews and recommendations of previous clients.
However, I eventually learned that in order to survive in this industry, I had to get comfortable reassuring a young bride that I am very good at what I do: designing flowers to give full expression to her vision of her wedding day.
Please tell us about Bloomzies by Gwen.
Bloomzies by Gwen is a boutique wedding and event design business, specializing in custom and creative floral designs. We are pleased to serve Dallas and surrounding areas and are available for destination weddings.
Booking no more than one wedding or event per day allows us to focus on excellence in interpreting the client’s
overall vision for their special day down to the most discriminating detail.
I am most proud of satisfied couples. For a bride to be thrilled with her flowers not only validates me as a floral artist but also confirms I successfully sought out and entered into her inspiration.
Recently, a bride told me her wedding flowers were more beautiful than she knew flowers could be. This is why I do it!! Every couple is unique. So should be their wedding day, down to the smallest floral touch of elegance or whimsy.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over I would start sooner. Following my dream has allowed me to pour my whole heart into my work.
I am blessed to be here where I am now, thanks to a great team, supportive family, and clients who allow me to grow, as an artist and business.
