Today we’d like to introduce you to John Paul Valverde and Miguel Vicens.
John Paul and Miguel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
John Paul – We started Coevál Studio because we thought there was a need in the market. We were looking for properties for a few of our earlier restaurant clients and some did not know what to do besides cook. I loved the design, food, and environments, and my business partner Miguel was working as a project architect on hospitality.
In 2007, the two of us looked at how to team up and create more opportunity within the quickly slowing economy after the recession. So, that is when we created Coevál Studio to focus on developing meaningful spaces, from the brand to operation.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Miguel Vicens – I would say our biggest struggle was everything prior to the start of Coevál Studio. Early in my career, I worked with a variety of architecture and design firms, where I took part in both residential and Hospitality design projects – all the while hoping that I’d be able to incorporate more creativity into my projects at some point.
After the drop in the economy, all of the projects I’d been working on came to a halt, and I was laid off some weeks later. Turns out that the challenge presented to me was a blessing in disguise, as John and I wouldn’t have conjoined forces to create Coevál Studio without it. It is never a smooth road in this industry if you want to stay innovative, so we look forward to the challenges coming to us and will keep pushing.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
John Paul – We created Coeval Studio to be a branding, architecture, and interior design firm that creates unforgettable experiences through impeccable design. We believe in challenging the status quo and enjoy projects that involve a mix of modern and classical design elements. Our team has unique and mixed expertise that help challenge ideas and develop unique experiences when taking clients’ ideas from concept to open doors.
Ultimately, we believe that the concept or location drives the right design style for any of our projects. As we continue to grow as a company, we hope to push our boundaries in the realm of design and see diversity flourish in all of our projects to come.
What were you like growing up?
Miguel Vicens – The first memories that come to mind from when I was a kid, where designing and buildings spaceships using paper or Legos all the time. My parents would buy me a large box of Legos that contained all the pieces to put together a truck and I would never read the instructions, so I designed and built some other things. I was always doing something creative in my free time out of school, drawings or painting and always thinking outside the box.
