Meet Jessy Graham of Jessys Salon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessy Graham.

Jessy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My clients/friends have told me my life is like an HBO series. Through the drama, the downright weird, and the insanely wonderful, it certainly has been a thrilling life. My love for hair began when I was 13 during my first professional cut at a real salon. My stylist (and now my friend, Tiffany Mueller) made me feel so inspired and confident when she took my hair from the middle of my back to a chin length bob. I knew then that I wanted to make others feel that too. She encouraged me to pursue the cosmetology program through my high school. Well I did and saved 20k by doing so!

After graduating, I started my career at Moutons Salon undergoing the intern program there. I spent 3 years learning everything I could soak up and then I finally took a risk and struck out on my own. At the age of 23 “Jessy’s Girl Salon” was born, and shortly after so was the 1st of my 3 boys, Isaiah, Kellan and Donovan. Before long, I was teaching my own intern program and traveling the country with Aquage as a guest educator. So yeah, things were going great, I expanded my Salon, two times, got voted best salon in my city three times, and then life happened (insert “HBO series”).

There’s a lot to tell about the whirlwind that happened next. It spanned my personal life, my business and everything in between. I decided the best thing for me and my 3 boys, was to close Jessy’s Girl Salon and re-open at a smaller, closer to home location as “Jessy’s Salon”. As a single mom who loves my babies I realized that I can be more active with them at the same time as doing what I love with my guests. Who would have thought? JK. I’ve been honored to have clients that have supported my downsizing and followed me through every journey my life has taken, and to them I am so grateful.

I’m excited now to continue mentoring new hairstylists and sharing my love of hair and positivity to my guests and learning their stories so I can let their internal beauty show more clearly on the outside! Now I’m excited about where things are going and I couldn’t have done any of it without God’s help, my clients support and my families love!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t know of any awe-inspiring destinations that didn’t require some rough travels along the way. The biggest struggle for me has been learning to balance everything I love in life. Through the birth of my third child Donovan, I learned to be present in the small moments of each day with my boys which overflowed into my career and helped me look for and listen for even the smallest cues in my guest’s journey. Being present in even the minutes or hours of their appointments which has stopped me from getting burnt out and made me a more detailed artist.

Two years ago I went through a divorce. We owned our salon together and most documents including our lease was in his name solely. There were times I wanted to cower and hide because of my ignorance, but I used it as an opportunity to learn, reflect, re-brand and start over as Jessy’s Salon. Now I’m still a work in progress but getting better and better at balancing my passions.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Jessys Salon – what should we know?
I’m known for creating custom looks. Observing face shape, head shape, and hair texture and giving modern suggestions that enhances my guest’s personality. I’ve been called the “pixie lady” for my short haircuts. Although I also love creating vibrant fashion colors, and modern balayage highlights.

I LOVE doing dramatic before and after transformations. I specialize in correcting color and restoring hair back to its best potential. I will offer styling tips and be your hair partner in giving my recommendations for at home styling and care also.

I use Hairdreams Hair extensions which create lengthening and thickening that I can customize to your own hair type to create the most natural transition from your hair.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My work ethic and positive outlook. I am always looking to learn new things to stay inspired. I love mentoring and seeing growth in stylists around me. When we all succeed as a community then I succeed also. It works hand in hand. Also- I like to laugh a lot.

I LOVE Jessy’s work, she has taken my drab limp hair and turned it into a conversation starter with the pixie cut you see above. She is definitely on point when she says her styles help to compliment personality, I have never felt more at home in my hair. I can’t give enough praise about Jessy and her fantastic styles. I regularly give out her card after being complimented on this sweet sweet hair cut!

I just want to say that Jessy is the absolute best. I went to her for about 6 years before I moved to Austin. About 8 months ago I wanted to reach out to her and about had a breakdown when I saw Jessy’s Girl Salon had closed.. I’m so happy learn that you are still rockin’ it though!! (Doesn’t surprise me one bit 😉 ) My hair was always at its best in her care! I actually moved about 3 years ago and am still searching for a “Jessy” – you know what I mean! From day one she was thorough and spent time with me before she did anything just to make sure she knew what I wanted. She kept detailed notes so that I didn’t have to re-explain what I wanted and she knew exactly what she did before. She is such a personable, passionate, and talented woman and I urge you to see her if you live close. I miss her and would honestly drive 4 hours just to have her do my hair! – LeeAnne

I just found this article while looking for Jessy’s contact info and saw LeeAnne’s comment above. That is EERIE – she did my hair for several years… but then I moved to Austin 4 years ago and am still looking for a Jessy, too! She is a once in a lifetime gem of a stylist. Insanely talented, fashionable, kind, and smart. My hair has never been the same since I moved. Austin needs you, Jessy 😉
