Exploring Life & Business with Tim McComsey of TRYM FITNESS

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim McComsey.

Tim McComsey

Hi Tim, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was always deemed the “athletic type” and genuinely loved sports. Growing up, I played soccer, basketball, football, and baseball with my older brothers and friends. Although I was good at many things, I excelled in soccer. This sport gave way for growth and opportunity. This sport is when I truly learned the meaning of dedication and focus… To be tenacious and resilient. Years went on, and I thoroughly enjoyed soccer playing for the state and selecting teams as I traveled the country. While I was fifteen, I found myself intrigued with the health and fitness industry. I began to read countless fitness magazines and became unhealthily hooked on how to improve not just my mentality and skills but my physicality. I constantly strived to make myself “better than yesterday’s self” and wanted my skills to surpass others. This not only built my self-esteem and confidence but it egged it on. Soccer, especially “fitness,” at moments changed from a “pastime” to passion, from passion to obsession. I began to eat clean and lift weights at the age of just 16–I was HOOKED. Our team won state, and it was my last year of playing, according to my own mind, “exceptional.”… I tend to be quite hard on myself. My eating habits had become more rigid, and my exercise routine was over the top. I started to lose the muscle I needed to not only play the sport that I loved but to function properly. I grew smaller, and my skills slowly diminished. It was then everyone knew– this was a problem. I was admitted to a registered dietitian for help. But why… “nothing was wrong…”

Fast forward some odd years– my parents split, and I made the decision to live my own life. I quit soccer, the sport I loved but dangerously entangled me. I transferred to a nutrition college, and in order to do this, I worked as a floor monitor at a local gym. “Baby steps to success’’. I guess it’s true… “STARTED FROM THE BOTTOM NOW WE’RE HERE”… Odd enough, this gym was the same gym my dad had taken me to see the registered dietitian years earlier. I had fallen in love with the work and lifestyle of the personal trainers. And just like that, I studied to be a licensed trainer. One month later, thanks to the hard work and dedication I learned back in school, I did it. However, I was crushed when the club manager decided NOT to hire me after all of the effort I put into this. THIS WAS SOMETHING I WANTED TO DO. He knew good and well the battles of my eating disorder that I was facing for quite some time. Despite being a licensed professional now, I continued my floor job and found multiple gyms nearby where I had finally begun to train. Working three gyms, going to school full time to become a registered dietitian, and keeping my health at bay is hard work, let me tell ya. But it’s possible. Life was hectic. The overwhelming pressure surrounded me, and I was diagnosed as “bulimic” in my young twenties. My mindset was twisted, and I became consumed with FOOD, food, food along with the studying and three jobs I managed to have time for. The new club manager saw my potential and hired me. You best believe I took full advantage of his willingness to teach me. After all, “The secret to success is to find great teachers and to follow their advice to the letter.” I have to agree, and I owe him for giving me the knowledge I needed to succeed as a man in this world in order to become something more than I ever thought possible… To be different… And seek out opportunities… To achieve goals and surpass my greatest potential… to be healthy. However, on the contrary, my social life became non-existent, I became ill, and “food” consumed my mind. I realized I was a hypocrite. How can I tell others how to be healthy when I myself was the farthest thing from it? Something needed to change– that change needed to be my mindset–my attitude–to think differently–to be smarter. These changes are necessary in every season of life, no matter where or who we are. The struggle and the fight continued, but I persevered. Today, I am 37 and proud to say I am bulimia free. I am healthy. I am mentally strong. I am never reverting back.

I made a life transition on a whim, and YES, I admit, the move itself was scary. ONE car full of belongings that would fit. I drove… and drove and started a job at 24-hour fitness in Texas. I hated the corporate environment and having to sell xxx amounts of dollars per month, according to management. (Something I knew I’d never get accustomed to.) I had people in PA betting against me that I would move back in 3 months’ time and saw this as a challenge. In the 3rd month, I left 24-hour fitness and started my own business…TRYM FITNESS LLC, which is still a great success today, as I’ve met the best of friends, and amazing people on this journey of a lifetime.

I started out with simply two clients who lovingly followed me from 24-hour fitness and had faith in my personal uprising as well as my “one-man show” business. I slowly figured out the key to creating relationships– to create trust– with people and potential clients– to be YOU. I used social media to market myself in a new city where I knew very few and had Groupon to get people in my door with almost ‘free’ prices. Within months, I had a relatively good clientele list. I was proud of my progress. But progress doesn’t stop. In about 3 years, I had 4 trainers working for me in the DFW area. Around year four, I decided to go full throttle and make a name for myself, jumping into a business I’d hope would explode. I co-owned with a great friend our own gym where Trym Fit and Rough Recess Fit were run. I wanted to be smart and contribute to the community as I quickly gained their trust to trust me in helping them reach their fullest potential as they (whether they knew it or not) were helping me. TRYM Fit was a safe place to create healthier habits during hectic days and minimal “off time.” Other independent trainers and massage therapists joined, and what started from nothing turned into something… and something big I’m proud to have accomplished despite my trials. During this time, when social media was at its rise, I became a social media influencer where I was able to create more income by developing content on Instagram for fitness, supplement, and various other companies, where I had amazing “once in a lifetime” opportunities as a result of hustle, dedication, and hard work. To this day, Trym Fitness is still rocking.

Motivation for me was simple. Do or Die (fail)… failure was never an option – when things got slow, I stayed the course and just kept doing what I knew I excelled in. I never made the move back home, and instead, given my personality and everything I had been taught, I paved a path of personal growth and success, living a life where I know how to hustle.

I think we all can agree with this statement, just by reflecting back on our own lives, the lessons that we have all learned from our own participation goes far beyond just the game itself. In fact, it helped shape who we were, the friends we had, the decision to go to college, and for many of us, it even led to career paths offering us the opportunity to give back and reteach all the life lessons that we learned at such a fragile, yet important time in our personal lives.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Struggles were definitely starting out and being new to Texas. I didn’t have a base of people I knew or had trained before I decided to become my own boss. Hustling and grinding to get my name out wasn’t the most ideal situation but I took it day by day. Funny, as I write this “day by day,” I realize that is how I overcame my bulimia as well.

We’ve been impressed with TRYM FITNESS, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
TRYM FITNESS is truly the one-stop shop for anyone seeking a healthier and more fit lifestyle… As a Registered Dietitian and Certified Personal Trainer, I cover all areas of fitness and nutrition. Combining the two puts me at an advantage over others in my industry. I offer in-person personal training/nutrition consults and small group training. I have my own app, TRYM FIT, online that I can now offer custom workout plans and meal plans for anyone in the world.

I simply make fitness fun and enjoyable for everyone. My goal is to get as many people to look forward to working out and making small nutrition changes no matter where they are in life. My knowledge from being a trainer since 2001 helps me adapt to most people coming to see me. I walk the talk and practice what I preach. No BS from me and my brand.

I recently launched an apparel brand called ROUGH RECESS. www.RoughRecess.com.

I offer apparel for everyone and anyone that includes workout apparel, workout accessories, hats, bikinis, leggings, booty shorts, and hoodies.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I am not sure luck plays a role in our lives. We simply have to work for things and put us in the right situations (hopefully) to allow things to happen in our favor. When I started my business, it was SO MUCH work that I put myself in a place to have good things come.
