Hidden Gems: Meet Kevin Johnson of Taste by Chef Kevin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Johnson.

Hi Kevin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers. 
My career began in 1996 as a cook for the US Navy onboard the USS John F Kennedy (CV-67), where we prepared 25,000 meals a day for all crew members on board the ship. After being honorably discharged from the Navy in Sept 2000, I began my career as a restaurant chef. I began working as a line cook at a few different restaurants that specialized in various cuisines. Then, in 2005, I landed my first head chef position for Bonefish Grill in Winston Salem, N.C. 

A year and a half later, I decided I needed a change of scenery, so we packed up and moved to Texas. Once in Texas, I began working in various restaurants and even as a pastry chef. Then, in May 2008, I began working for a Globe Life Insurance company as the Executive Chef, where I remained for 15 years. During my time at Globe Life, I started a catering company called Culinary Affairs by Chef Kevin in 2013, which has now been rebranded to Taste by Chef Kevin. 

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Navigating the culinary landscape in a fiercely competitive market poses multifaceted challenges, especially for non-bilingual chefs like myself. The absence of fluency in multiple languages can hinder communication with diverse team members and patrons. As an African American chef, breaking barriers and dispelling stereotypes in an industry often marred by a lack of diversity presents additional hurdles. Overcoming preconceptions and forging a path in a competitive market demands resilience, creativity, and unwavering determination.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
While I do advocate for mentorship, I was not afforded the opportunity to do so. I, being self-taught, understand the value of perseverance and self-motivation. I also embrace every challenge as an opportunity to learn, grow, and refine my craft through dedication and passion.
