Today, we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Amos.
Hi Taylor, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve had a passion for creating things since I was a child. I can remember going to my dad’s and we would re-draw the cartoons from cereal boxes and the daily newspapers. Over the years, I took any class I could that involved creating, from your typical art classes to things like fashion, web design, architecture, and even Lego robotics. I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to do as a career, but I did know it would be something in a creative field. Fast forward to college, I was studying Art and Design and also taking on a minor in marketing. I decided to start applying some of the skills I was learning and put myself out there as an artist. It started out with a logo design here and there and then turned into me doing commission pieces and cover art for people.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was definitely NOT a smooth road. I didn’t even see myself being a painter until I decided to just pick up a brush and canvas one day and use the paints that had been sitting in my art supplies from class. My end goal is to be a digital marketer and to build up somewhat of the portfolio; I needed to find something or someone to market, so I, of course, chose myself. Now I have someone, but I still don’t have something. My friends would see my drawings from class and started asking me to create things for them. I started posting the work online and getting more requests for art. Now I had my something. I am still facing challenges today, though. Now that I’m out of college and working full time, I have to find a balance and make sure I make time for my art.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I paint on canvas and digitally. I mostly did canvas work, but as I get requests for cover art, I’ve moved into the digital world more. Even though I’m really enjoying digital illustration, my “Afro Samurai x Bape” piece is still what I am most proud of. It was the largest canvas I had ever painted on and challenged me so much, as the original art style for the character was a lot different than what I was used to. I believe what sets me apart from other artists is that I’m willing to try anything. Some artists have certain styles or stay in one lane, but I want to explore everything and learn new techniques. I love the challenges that different requests have brought me.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was an ambivert and still am. I spent a lot of time alone in my room, but it was fine because I highly enjoyed my space and entertaining myself. I did this by playing my Playstation or watching movies and sketching. When I did leave my room, I liked to hang out with my cousins. I was a tomboy, so video games, fighting, and riding dirt bikes were the norm.
