Today we’d like to introduce you to Melody Dunlap.
Hi Melody, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My husband Josh and I always knew we’d be entrepreneurs — it’s in our blood. When we were planning our wedding, we came up with the acronym “JMD” (for Joshua and Melody Dunlap), and it stuck. As newlyweds in 2016, we decided to step out on a limb, leverage our talents, and combine our passions into one business venture that became JMD Productions. He is a gifted producer, skilled in all things videography, and I have always had a knack for project management and organizational administration, coupled with my creative and musical gifts. It started out with me just handling the financial aspects of our business and managing client relations, but it soon turned into a full-fledged media and marketing consulting business. While working as a full-time entrepreneur for JMD Productions, I am also a traveling minister/worship leader, and I’m in the process of becoming a published author.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart. We’ve endured many challenges, especially mentally and financially, over the years. Josh entered full-time entrepreneur life after being furloughed from his day job as a videographer due to the pandemic, and I later joined him when I was let go from my job as a school administrator. As you can imagine, this took a heavy toll on our mental health. We had worked hard on our business before, but it had always been a side hustle, so when it unexpectedly became our only source of income, we battled with strategizing ways to pay our bills and still invest in equipment and services that could help provide an excellent quality experience for our clients. There have been plenty of times we wanted to give in to insecurity and give up, but the main goal that keeps us on the path and pressing forward is legacy. We believe wholeheartedly in leaving a deposit on this earth while we’re blessed to be here, and we want to help others do the same — to tell their stories, share their gifts, and teach what they’ve learned so we can all evolve and grow stronger together. That’s what it’s all about.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Everyone everywhere is constantly marketing — promoting things we believe in or supporting and selling products and services that will somehow help enrich people’s lives. JMD Productions is a one-stop shop for all your marketing needs. What really sets us apart is the wide variety of services we offer, from videography and photography to strategic consulting and content writing. I’ve worked as an administrative professional for over 20 years while also balancing a career as a singer/songwriter, so my professional background is heavy with both onstage and backstage experience. If someone has a dream or idea, I aim to help them articulate it into a vision they can carry out. I can see the mountaintop goal and also plan the steps to get you there. This gives me a unique edge when connecting with influencers and entertainers while also providing tools to help assist those who do their best work behind the scenes. I’ve found that many people have great ideas and intentions but lack the systems and structure necessary to sustain them, so we always begin our process with a consultation to offer helpful support to our clients and make recommendations of services they can elevate their projects. We also specialize in event coordinating and project management, helping individuals and companies bring their ideas to life in creative ways. Seeing our clients’ visions become reality brings us so much joy!
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I believe it’s important to see people where they are and push them into their potential. Everyone has something to give, and we need all the expressions and gifts we can get in order to make a positive impact on our world. As a teacher by nature, I take pride in patiently coaching people into new mindsets and new perspectives. I work hard to empathize with my clients’ stories and find innovative solutions to challenges they face while simultaneously encouraging them to step out of insecurity and own their brilliance. In a world where so many use their platforms to tear people down, it’s so important that we build one another up.
