Today we’d like to introduce you to Cathe Becker, Cherie Douglass, & Christy Rollins. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Midlo Scoops is owned and operated by three sisters, Cathe, Christy, and Cherie. We opened in May 2021. The year before, our husbands purchased an old house to use for business and found that the kitchen had already been zoned as an ice cream shop! We liked the opportunity and decided to go for it! We spent many family gatherings dreaming up ideas of how to make it fun and memorable for our community. As a family, we had spent several ski trips together and agreed that snow skiing would be a unique theme for our ice cream shop, especially in a small Texas town! We chose to make homemade ice cream and found the required equipment and training to make it a reality. After a year of experimenting with recipes and building renovations, we were finally ready for business, and the community welcomed us with open arms.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We started off with a small machine that would make about a gallon of ice cream at time. In the first three weeks of being open, we realized we needed a bigger machine! Several nights a week, we would make ice cream until 2 am! The bigger machine was ordered, but we had to wait for three months before delivery. That meant a lot more late nights for the summer, but we made it work.
Another challenge, in the beginning, was that half or more of our waffle cone shipments were broken, so we decided to make them in-house. There’s nothing better than the smell of fresh waffle cones in the afternoon!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Cathe was a stay-at-home mom for her 4 children. The youngest had been in school for a few years and she was looking for a something more to do, now she is the main ice cream maker and business operator at Midlo Scoops.
Christy is a full-time teacher, swim coach, marathon runner, and mom of 3. She has helped to build the team and helps with ongoing needs of the business.
Cherie is a mom of 2 and works full-time for a jewelry company and heads up our social media and also helps with the ongoing needs of the business.
Because this is a family-owned and operated business, we have chosen to be closed on Sundays so we can spend time together as a family.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
People love ice cream! It’s a great way to create family memories, catch up with friends, celebrate accomplishments, or just satisfy a sweet tooth. We would love to expand to other cities in the near future.
