Hi Kal, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
By education, I am a pharmacist and worked in industrial and retail pharmacy for years. For my young family, I chose to be a stay-at-home dad for several years and pivoted to IT during this time. I have loved animals all my life, cats, dogs, birds, cows, goats, horses… Have always had pets myself. During COVID, our trusted pet groomer retired, and I could not find anyone I could trust. For my cat, they wanted him sedated, for my dog, people I thought I could trust were either too expensive or had a three month wait. So, I started to groom them myself. I, by no means, am a professional groomer but I wanted to provide as affordable as possible and gentle grooming for cats and dogs. A friend introduced me to Zoomin Groomin. A franchise that pays groomers better than anyone else I have encountered, uses environmentally friendly products, believes in the best groom experience for cats and dogs. I did not want to be a part of any franchise that does not compensate the people putting in physical work well (in this case, the groomers). This company checked all my ethical points, so I signed up, went for an extensive training, hired groomers whom I would trust with my own fur-family and rest is history.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No road to anything worthwhile is ever smooth, right? Whether it be I-635 or a new business. Have overcome multiple struggles thus far, such as funding a new business with a young family, allotting enough time for family as well as a growing a business, trying to make each and every client happy, making sure my groomers are well compensated and well cared for. Thankfully, I have met so many amazing people along the way who’ve been very encouraging and willing to help and guide. Struggles are what help us grow, so I do not mind challenges along the way,
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Zoomin Groomin – Garland, TX, is a small family-owned business. It’s a part of the Zoomin Groomin franchise but very individualized, and we run it so that we treat our clients the way we’d like to be treated as pet parents. We are a Luxury Mobile Pet Grooming service. We come to you in our state-of-the-art van which has everything needed for a relaxing spa day for your fur baby. It has a large tub with a shower, electric grooming table, AC/heat, water heater, dryers, a no-noise dryer for our fur-clients that do not like the dryer sound, all the tools needed for dog and cat groom, and environmentally friendly products from shampoos, conditioners, flea bath, towels, to teeth cleaners, ear cleaners, nose, and paw butter.
Our van is a soothing and calming environment for our fur clients. We do not use crates or leave them under the dryer. We come to your home, take your fur baby from you to our van, and provide them the best one-on-one grooming they can have. From baths to nails to ears and teeth. We offer several packages to fit each client’s needs. We offer de-shed gland expression. Our goal is to make the grooming experience as pleasant as we can so pets enjoy it, as good as regular grooming is necessary for a healthy, happy fur baby.
Groomers we hire have to pass our personal pet test, if we cannot trust them grooming our pup or kitty, we cannot have them touch any fur-client. Our groomers are the kindest gentlest people who have a love for fury clients. We ensure our groomers are well taken care of. Sometimes it means we run lunch to them if they haven’t had a chance to stop and eat, sometimes it is meeting them to help with a fury client who is having an off day and needing extra TLC.
Myself, my wife Kim, and our son Niles, we all work together in this business, our mascot Zoomie is our 10 yo son in the Zoomie costume. All messages are returned by myself or my wife.
We are proud of bringing this service to our community. We service all neighborhoods, including apartment communities and senior living facilities. When school is out, Zoomie goes with us to cheer up seniors while our groomers transform their pets. Making people and pets happy brings us joy we cannot put into words.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Doing the right thing. I truly believe what goes around comes around. We treat everyone the way we would like to be treated and treat every pet the way we’d like our pets to be treated with kindness, love, and patience. So far, 90% of our new clients are referred by our current clients, and that is the best compliment for us, when someone tells a friend, hey for fuzzy’s and floppy’s groom, call Zoomin Groomin-Garland, they did a great job with mine.
