Check Out Joseph Johnson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Johnson.

Joseph Johnson

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
We got started after my son’s passing in October of 2021. We became a fully accredited 501c3 in Feb 2022, and that’s the humble beginnings. As his father, I was absolutely amazed how many people showed up at his visitation. The register had nearly 700 names in it. There was a line around the building waiting in the rain to pay their last respects. I wasn’t about to let that die, and so to honor his memory, I started the foundation to help others who wanted to pursue the same aspirations he had. He worried quite a bit about the future, so I wanted to make sure no other veteran who had served as he did never have to worry about their future. We have been so blessed with the response to our mission. We have quadrupled in size, having generated over a quarter million dollars since inception, numerous volunteers, and sponsors. We provide $10,000 scholarships each year to 5 honorable veterans to “get them off the pavement” and on their way to high-flying career in aviation.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are struggles… This biggest at the moment is just being new. No one has heard of us, but we are growing rapidly and getting national recognition… Each day, we connect with more and more people and as they learn of us, the response is typically very enthusiastic and positive. most want to know how they can support us financially, emotionally, and physically. It’s been such a blessing in disguise helping our family deal with the grief. While I handle the day-to-day, I know that my wife and daughter take solace and peace of mind because this makes a lasting impression of his legacy on people.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a professional pilot for American Airlines. Currently, my duties include training and testing our new pilots as they come on board. Aside from that, I also run a “side hustle,” training and testing private pilots, as well as providing career counseling, mentorship, and guidance for those pilots seeking a professional career in aviation. I am known in the DFW metroplex as a “tough but fair” examiner. I’ve been on numerous. YouTube series called “In the Hangar” and some other well-known YouTubers. I think that is what sets me apart since everyone in the metroplex that’s in aviation watches that channel… You could “google” it Joe Johnson DPE In the Hangar.

What matters most to you? Why?
My family is what matters to me most… without family, what are you… Losing Ashton was a huge blow to us. He was the center of entertainment at family functions. Such an outgoing personality. His brother, Cagle and sister, Kaylee were really troubled by his loss as well. I grew up in a big family, so family gatherings is what I always looked forward to, and getting everyone together at Christmas and Thanksgiving. and even other random times.
