Today we’d like to introduce you to Elisabeth Davis.
Hi Elisabeth, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It started with a prayer and covenant with my mother and God. She asked God to let her seed be musically gifted. Her collateral for her request was that she would live for God all her life; And she would give her children back to God. Our mother was our role model and conduit for our relationship with God and our love for music, especially Gospel Music. As a little girl, I remember being timid and shy. But when music was in the room, I was a kid in a candy store. It made me feel alive, free, whole, and connected to something bigger than me (God). I literally would sing until I was tired or told to hush… lololol I guess I was getting on my family’s nerves. But the quietness lasted only a short while and I was right back to singing like no one was listening or watching. Fast forward, I’m still singing with the same vigor and childlike expression I had when I was a little girl. I’m an Independent Gospel Artist, Writer, Producer, Minister of Music, and Entrepreneur.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Roads can never be smooth because life happens. We are flawed, so mistakes will occur. I thought that I would be received well because I was singing about God. But, of course, my eyes were opened. The more attention I received, I start seeing people change or completely leave the picture. When I said I was going to do what God told me (sing His Praises), now I’m seen as better than others, judgemental, or a snob. The criticism was harsh and hurtful. It put me in a place of isolation and self-doubt. I actually didn’t want to sing anymore. And I knew it wasn’t what my mother would have wanted for me. Through prayer and good counsel, I was able to bounce back. I made up my mind that because God gave me my gift, I wouldn’t let anything or no one stop me from doing what I was called to do.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a singer, composer, and producer who dabbles in fashion and interior design. As a singer, I’m known for fusing jazzy riffs and runs in gospel music (all styles). As a composer I want to write music that is timeless but catchy. I want it to be easy but profound. As a producer, I want my arrangements to tell a clear and provoking story that makes you thirsty for more. Fashion is my second language. It gives me an opportunity to express every emotion I have. Mostly, it allows me the space to be ELISABETH. Lastly interior design is a passion I’ve had since I was very young. I loved the challenge of a simple space and making it great. The right color of paint on the wall, the right artwork, the right accessories, the right rug, the right table, the right lighting, the right, etc… It goes on and on… All of this speakes volumes and makes the difference in the design. I’m most proud of the fact that I get to use my interest and talents for the kingdom. Whatever I endeavor to do, God will get the glory. As with anyone, what sets us apart is our uniqueness. But specifically, I believe it is my pure heart to stay true to myself and God.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
The greatest advice I can offer is stay focused. We let the little things distract us from obtaining our goals. I’ll do it tomorrow, and tomorrow turns into years, and years turn into regret, and regret turns into bitterness. It’s an endless cycle of nothing. Listening is one the greatest gifts we can receive. It teaches you what to do and what not to do. I wish someone would have deposited that nugget in me over and over.
