Hi Ashley, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
To me, every room needs some piece of greenery, whether living, artificial, colorful, or shades of green. This interest in decorating with florals is what led me to create Lakewood Succulent.
As a child, I remember always rearranging furniture in my home, editing bookshelves, and learning how to garden with my mom. I discovered that light conditions and life conditions didn’t always allow for living plants. Since the quality of artificial florals has improved in recent years, there has once again been a desire for these in the home. I enjoy making custom arrangements for a variety of customers. My designs can range from a small tabletop piece to longer items for commercial spaces. I love seeing my work show up in magazines, websites, and Instagram posts.
I am happily married with two amazing daughters and reside in the adorable Lakewood neighborhood of Dallas. I worked in the medical field as a registered nurse before finding my creative outlet as a self-taught florist.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
A lot of my products are shipped from overseas. The years of Covid definitely made it difficult to keep shipping costs down and to even get some of my favorite products. This increase in shipping never went down after covid, and I have had to build this increase in cost into the cost of my products.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Even though I started out making living succulent arrangements, I have found my niche with artificial floral. I have become known for having artificial succulents and florals that are very real looking to the eye and even to feel. Some customers still ask me to confirm that the arrangement is made with artificial plants, even after picking it up and taking it home. I have had customers tell me that they have found their husband or housekeeper watering the florals or succulents because they thought they were living! I love getting this type of feedback from my customers because it helps confirm that I am still making my arrangements with high quality believable products.
