Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Davis.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
From a mission perspective, we began printing political signs and banners in 1991. The journey began as a need to ‘do’ something. Today, we can print on everything except people. We leave that to the tattoo experts of our communities. We have had the privilege of clarifying as vision as we go. Today, our vision is to communicate a business’ passion to the community they serve. The avenue we do this is through printing.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Running a small business is not easy.
Obstacle 1 of MANY: You have to become a jack of all trade when you began as a jack with 1 trade.
You move from an individual dream to managing people and their dreams, their challenges, and serving people who also have their own things in addition to having to be the IT expert and plumber while maintaining machinery and staying up to date on trends that best serve your community. Did I mention it isn’t a smooth road?
Obstacle 2 of MANY MORE: Rising Costs
Small businesses are also not always… the cheapest guy around and we have to be upfront about that. We had to move from a good ole boy system to communicate in real-time, raising costs, and man, that was hard. However, what we have found is that communicating upfront about rising costs and payment requirements, we’ve actually been able to serve current clients better and expand our services to new clients. We would love for our clients to never have to pay a dime, but unfortunately, we aren’t in a season to operate this way. We wish we could, but we cannot, and changing from allowing this practice to requiring clients to pay for their project in a timely fashion was a difficult shift. We lost good people we loved serving, but the truth is we were able to stay in position to serve others.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Dynamic Graphics?
We are pretty simple. We communicate someone’s vision or passion with our ink. We love the story behind every project. Many times, we get to be at the starting line where a person’s passion becomes a reality. We print on almost anything without a heartbeat, and we specialize in creativity. One of our favorite conversations is to hear a crazy idea and figure out how to get it printed on something. Although we print on apparel, signs, walls, cars, fabrics, mugs, billboards, flags… you name it… we deeply enjoy hearing what drives a person and a business to communicate what is on their mind and hearts to the community around them. We get a front-row seat to dreams becoming real, life changes, and all the good and bad that comes with it. As a small business owner, we do so much more than produce content and meet deadlines. We get to see real people in real life with their real challenges. This is the coolest seat in any industry.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Mindset. What we do is not a sustainable reason. Why we do it is. Mission is what we do, and vision is what we see. Vision is where we make decisions from and believe that is what will sustain us much longer after the tasks, which are never done… are done.
